SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The Arizona women's tennis team split in both singles and doubles to end the opening day of the SDSU Fall Classic II with a 3-3 overall record on Friday.
“The girls had a very competitive showing today,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “They played hard and came up with some good wins, and the few matches we lost were short by only a couple of points. I am looking forward to more tennis tomorrow and another opportunity to improve.”
The tournament kicked off with doubles where the duo of junior Samantha Czarniak and freshman Sophia Thomas bested UC Irvine's Andrea Duva and Taylor LeFridge in the opening round of black draw action by a score of 7-6.
The red draw saw senior Inge Hendrikx and sophomore Devin Chyphya fall to SDSU's Tami Nguyen and Jana Buth by a score of 6-3.
In singles play Czarniak kept her positive momentum rolling, as she bested UC Irvine freshman Stephanie Hazzell in the black draw by a score of 6-1, 6-1 while Thomas took care of business in the pink draw, defeating UC Irvine freshman Catherine Kreslin in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).
Chyphya and Hendrikx both lost competitive matches in three sets. Chyphya fell to UC Irvine junior Sarah Gong (6-4, 5-7, 6-3), and Hendrikx was defeated by Air Force junior Chloe Forlini (6-3, 5-7, 6-0).
Arizona will begin day two of the SDSU Fall Classic II tomorrow at 9 a.m. starting with doubles play.
