TUCSON, Ariz.- Men's Basketball's Allonzo Trier, Women's Tennis' Marie Van Aelst, Swim and Dive's Matt Lujan, and Volleyball's Devyn Cross have been named the C.A.T.S. Academics Student Athletes for the month of November. These students have been honored for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.
These students have been chosen by the C.A.T.S Academic staff.
Trier, a junior guard from Seattle, Wash. is currently one of the most talented players in the Pac-12. In his sophomore campaign, earned a spot on the Second Team All-Pac 12 selection and Most Outstanding Player of the Pac-12 Tournament and an All-Tournament Team member. Earlier this year, Trier was named to the Jerry Watch Preseason Award watch list, as well as the ESPN preseason All-American Team. Kiaira Ladd, Trier's academic counselor comments "Allonzo is a General Studies major who has really dedicated himself to his studies this semester. He is focused and responsible and is on track to have his best semester yet."
Van Aelst is a Belgium native in her sophomore year at the University of Arizona. She appeared in 23 matches for the Wildcats in her first season, winning six matches, as well as going 2-1 in tournament play. Van Aeslt went 3-4 with Paris Corley in doubles action. Andy Salgado, her C.A.T.S Academic Counselor, speaks highly of Van Aelst saying "Marie recently declared Economics as her major and is double minoring in Psychology and Sports Management. She did very well academically her freshman year and has continued that success in her 2nd year."
Lujan is a Tucson local who specializes in the backstroke and the individual medley. The junior holds the fourth fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke and the sixth fastest 200-yard backstroke time on the team. Lujan was named a Pac-12 All-Academic first team member as well as an CSCAA Scholar All-American Honorable Mention. "Matt is a psychology major who has been killing it in the classroom. He's the kind of guy that does the right thing all the time. He's the definition of a student athlete," praises Sarah Howard, Lujan's academic counselor.
Cross, a middle blocker from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., just wrapped up her sophomore season at Arizona. Cross had a career high of nine blocks and season high of eight kills against Utah. She finished the season with a total of 103.5 points. C.A.T.S Academics Specialist Kelly Amsler and Brittany Crawford, Cross's academic counselor speak highly of her, saying "Devyn has soared ever since declaring her AFAS major. She takes great pride in the quality of work and how her studies are reflective of today's society. She's on track for her highest semester and cumulative GPA!"
