The best time of your life.
An experience like none other.
Goes by way too fast.
These are cliché phrases we hear way too often to describe the college experience. But just because they're cliché, and just because they're said to often, doesn't mean their wrong.Â
As the Wildcats women's basketball team's regular season comes to an end this weekend, the five seniors -
LaBrittney Jones,
Breanna Workman,
Malena Washington,
Lauren Evans, and
Dejza James - know their time here is coming to an end, and as they reflect on their time at Arizona, I think they may all agree with the clichés too.
Â
"It means everything to be a Wildcat," said star forward
LaBrittney Jones. "I love this school and I love this community. It's a great feeling knowing that you have support from everyone."
Â
This support comes from a passionate fan base that truly cares for the sports program and all the players that belong to it.
Â
But even with the support from the outside, a team has to support each other from the inside. They have to build chemistry and trust on and off the court.
Â
With the coaching staff changing this year, that chemistry wasn't easy to find at first, but finding it was actually Washington's favorite part of her career.
Â
"My favorite moment was the retreat we did in September," said Washington. "We went to Mount Lemmon and stayed in a cabin. We went zip lining and spent a lot of time together and really got to know each other… We had new coaches and we didn't know them and they didn't know us. We had people on the team that weren't close too. So I think we had a lot of time to just be with each other and learn about each other and I think that really helped bring us closer."
Â
While this year they had to work to build that chemistry with a new coaching staff and new incoming players, the seniors have all been building a chemistry between themselves for the last four years.
Â
"We've been through it all, and if anybody understands, they understand," said James. "Just knowing the person next to you has gone through what you're going through, and you can talk to them about anything, it's amazing. They're lifelong friends.
"
Â
This connection and chemistry between players is something that every program and team needs to have if they want to win.
Â
Examples of this connection, and how they have come together, can be seen in some of their signature wins over their four years, maybe none bigger than when they beat #11 Stanford in the 2014-2015 season.
Â
"There are so many awesome memories from that game," said Workman. "There was one moment in the game where it was really close… then Candice (Warthen) made a shot and everyone was screaming, everybody had their coverage, it was just crazy how, in that moment, everyone wanted to really dig deep and finish it out. It was crazy."
Â
While this game sticks out in the memory of most of the seniors from their overall career here, they also have also had some shining moments this year - with this coaching staff, and this team.
Â
What makes this moment possibly shine brightest of all, is that in came in the senior's last ever home game against rival Arizona State, a game in which they won in dramatic fashion 62-58.
Â
"I'd have to say last weekend playing ASU at home," Evans recalls when thinking about the best moment of the year. "That was very exciting. Everybody's energy was off the charts and everyone was willing to do anything to get the job done."
Â
Every career is filled with ups and downs. There are highlights and there are slip ups. There are wins and losses. But for these five seniors, it's safe to say they have represented this team, this program, and this school as well as anyone could have ever hoped.
Â
Arizona is lucky to have had them, and lucky to have gotten everything they have given back to us.
