TUCSON, Ariz. – A pair of University of Arizona football players collected prestigious honors Monday as they were selected to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America team. Colin Schooler, the Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year, and Kylan Wilborn represented the Wildcats as one of only three teams to place multiple players on the team.

Schooler was widely considered the top player on Arizona's young defense in 2017. The 6-foot-2, 226-pound linebacker finished the season with 95 tackles, including four sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss – all of which came in Pac-12 Conference play. He intercepted a pass, returned one 66 yards for a touchdown, forced a fumble and broke up a pass, while finishing the season as a starter over the last nine contests. In December, Schooler was named to freshman All-America teams by numerous outlets, including ESPN.com, USA Today and College Football News.

Wilborn was a 13-game starter on Arizona's defensive front at the "stud" position. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder totaled 33 stops and led the team with 7.5 sacks, while registered 9.5 tackles for loss. He also forced four fumbles and receoverd another, while breaking up one pass. Like Schooler, Wilborn was named a freshman All-American by USA Today last month.

The duo of true freshmen standouts will be joined by plenty of other experience around them for the 2018 season. The defense loses two notable starters – defensive back Dane Cruikshank and lineman Luca Bruno – but otherwise sees nine regular starters return. All totaled, the defense will have 75 percent of its starts returning from last season, with 17 players combining for 161 career starts.
