With just one word in early May,
Brandon Williams sent a wave of excitement through Tucson.
After a lengthy recruitment, Williams tweeted out where he would be playing college basketball. The 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound guard from Los Angeles posted a tweet that simply read "Committed." It featured a picture of himself in an Arizona uniform and the words "I'm Back" with a Block A.
Just how much excitement did it create in Tucson? Consider: The tweet drew 143 responses, 515 retweets and nearly 3,000 likes.
Arizona Basketball fans know a good one when they see one, and with Williams, they knew what they were getting.
If you don't, here are the nuts and bolts: Williams was a consensus Top 40 recruit, who averaged nearly 25 points per game as a high school senior at Crespi Carmelite High School in Southern California. He was named the Los Angeles Daily News Player of the Year last year and scored a season-high 52 points in a game during his final high school season.
He brings a unique skill set to the court that will allow coach
Sean Miller to utilize him at multiple positions and get a player on the court who can pour it in offensively and guard aggressively on the other end.
"Brandon is a talented young player," Miller said at the team's Media Day last month. "We were always going to play him in more than one position, and that's still the case. He can play the one, he can play the two, and he can be a part of (a three-guard lineup)."
Indeed, Williams is comfortable handling the ball and distributing to his teammates, while being the type of floor general Miller is used to having run Arizona's offense. But don't get it twisted, when he needs to shift over to the two-guard spot, he can do that too and show his knack for scoring.
After an unofficial debut in the First Watch Red-Blue Game earlier this month, Arizona fans will get their first official look at Williams in an Arizona uniform Tuesday during the team's first exhibition game of the season against Western New Mexico.
"It is going to be the first time we've all been on the same bench," Williams said recently. "I think we have a really good team. Practices have been going really well since Red-Blue, so it'll be exciting to take the court as one team. I've learned a lot, just a lot of little things that people wouldn't even recognize. I've learned from guys like Coach Miller, who was a point guard himself, and
Justin Coleman; guys that have been in this game.
"It's just little things like not to get too high or too low on yourself."
Williams has wasted no time announcing his presence since arriving in Tucson. He's currently wearing the gold jersey in practice. Miller tracks each practice in a variety of different categories and the player racking up the most total points in the different areas sports the gold jersey.
Of course, he'll have no problem trading in that gold jersey for an Arizona game jersey to wear with the rest of his teammates for the opener Tuesday against Western New Mexico. He got his first taste of playing at McKale Center at Red-Blue, and let's just say he enjoyed his experience.
"It was a dream come true," Williams said. "Coming to the last two Red-Blue's and seeing how it looked, there were plenty of times when I was looking around thinking 'wow, this is 14,000 people.' It was an honor and I'm happy to be part of it."
Not as happy as the 14,000-plus at McKale waiting to welcome him into the Arizona Basketball family.
