Arizona Goes for Sweep of Washington on Sunday

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats and their hot-hitting offense will play for a sweep of the Washington Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.

The Wildcats used that explosive offense to take game one of the series, 9-3, on Friday night. Arizona blasted four home runs, including two by Nick Quintana, to claim victory in the opener. Randy Lababut provided six strong innings of work on the mound, while Vince Vannelle slammed the door shut on Washington with three scoreless, hitless innings of relief.

Everything clicked again for Arizona in game two, with the offense collected 14 runs on 14 hits while the pitching staff limited Washington to just two runs on eight hits. The game two victory secured a series win for the Wildcats.

The Cats go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. MST. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Network.

SINCE LAST TIME: Since the last set of game notes, the Wildcats were swept in a three-game series against the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe...In that series, outfielder Tate Soderstrom hit .556 (5x9) with two runs scored, three doubles, and five RBI...Catchers Matthew Dyer (.500/7x14) and Austin Wells (.417/5x12) also had big weekends at the plate for the Cats...Relievers Gil Luna and Vince Vannelle both posted outstanding performances in the Saturday night game against ASU...Luna allowed just one hit and struck out five batters across 3.1 scoreless innings, while Vannelle fanned two batters and scattered just one hit across the final 2.1 innings of the night...Austin Wells (21 games) and Donta Williams (19 games) both reached base in all three games against ASU, extending their on-base streaks which are the two best logged by Wildcats batters this year.

BUSTER POSEY AWARD: Wildcats catcher Matthew Dyer was named this week to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list...This award was formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, and is presented annually to the nation's top division one collegiate catcher...Dyer is currently second on the team and 10th in the Pac-12 with a .361 (35x97) batting average, while his 35 hits are seventh in the conference and his 52 total bases rank tied for ninth on the circuit...Dyer has hit safely in all but eight games this year, with 12 multi-hit performances, and has logged a .987 fielding percentage in 159 chances.

FAMILIAR FACES: Four Wildcats players - Austin Wells, Cameron Cannon, Donta Williams, and Nick Quintana - have played in all 27 of Arizona's games this season...Wells, Cannon, and Quintana are the only three to have started in every game...Both Quintana and Cannon played and started in every game (56) for the Wildcats in 2018 as well...Quintana has started in 86 consecutive games for Arizona, dating back to June 2, 2017 against Sam Houston State, and has missed just one game in his Arizona career (May 28, 2017 against California)...Cannon has started in 83 straight games for Arizona, dating back to the first game of 2018 (February 17 vs. Bryant, GM1).

THE RBI GUY: Wildcats outfielder Tate Soderstrom has collected 21 RBI in just 54 at-bats this year...Among Pac-12 players with 20+ RBI, Washington's Nick Kahle (77 AB) is the next-quickest to have reached that mark...Four Pac-12 teams (Stanford, Oregon, USC, WSU) have no players with 20+ RBI, while the Wildcats have seven players who have reached and exceeded the mark: Nick Quintana, 30; Matt Fraizer, 28; Cameron Cannon, 26; Austin Wells, 23; Matthew Dyer, 21; Ryan Holgate, 21; Tate Soderstrom, 21.

RUN, FOREST, RUN!: The Wildcats currently rank second in the Pac-12 and fifth nationally with 252 runs scored this season...Arizona's average output of 9.3 runs per game is the fourth-best mark in the country...The Wildcats have scored at least three runs in all but two games this year, and have plated 10+ runs 12 times, including once against UCLA and their pitching staff that had the best team ERA in the conference at the time...When Arizona scores more than five runs in a game this year they have posted a winning record of 13-5 (.722)...The Wildcats are currently on pace to score 523 runs this year, which would be the most in a single-season since the 1998 squad scored 546 runs...Currently, 10 Arizona players have scored 10+ runs this season, while five have logged 25+ runs scored...No other Pac-12 program can match this performance (closest: Arizona State - 10+: 9, 25+, 4), and only three schools outside of the Arizonas has even one player with 25+ runs scored...The Wildcats have out-scored their opponents in 7-of-9 innings this season (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th).

STREAKONOMICS: Catcher/first baseman Austin Wells and outfielder Donta Williams both have on-base streaks that have reached double digits...Wells has reached base safely in 21 games, while Williams has gotten on base in each of his last 19 games...During Wells' streak, dating back to February 23 at Houston, he has hit .373 (28x75) with 22 runs scored, four doubles, one triple, one home run, 13 RBI, 18 walks, and a .485 on-base percentage...Over the course of Williams' streak, stretching back to February 27 against New Mexico, he has hit .319 (23x72) with 23 runs scored, five doubles, three triples, 12 RBI, 12 walks, and a .438 on-base percentage...As far as hitting streaks go, catcher Matthew Dyer currently leads the team with an active four-game hit streak...During Dyer's streak, going back to March 23 at San Diego State, he is hitting .556 (10x18) with two runs scored, three doubles, one triple, one RBI, and one walk.

SCHEDULE ADDITION: Arizona Wildcats baseball has scheduled an additional game to their 2019 regular season schedule, a Monday, May 13 matchup against the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Hi Corbett Field...This game was scheduled as a replacement for the Wildcats cancelled home game against Xavier on March 12, brings Arizona's regular season schedule back to 56 games, and will now serve as the final regular season home game at Hi Corbett Field in 2019...This will be the fifth matchup between the Wildcats and Bearkats in program history, with the all-time series currently even at two wins apiece...All four previous games between the two schools have come in the postseason, with Arizona winning two over Sam Houston State in the 2016 Lafayette NCAA Regional and the Bearkats taking two wins from the Wildcats in the 2017 Lubbock NCAA Regional...Sam Houston State has been selected to the NCAA Tournament and appeared in a Regional in five of the last seven seasons, and progressed to the Super Regionals in 2017...The Bearkats currently sport an RPI of 41, giving the Wildcats the opportunity to close out this year's home schedule with a quality win.
EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: The Wildcats have excelled at hitting to the gaps this year, and as a result are currently second in the Pac-12 with 102 extra-base hits on the year (first: Arizona State, 116)...The next closest team after the Wildcats is UCLA, with 80...Arizona's offense has hammered out a league-leading 16 triples and 62 doubles (2nd) to go with 24 home runs, which stands as the third-best mark on the circuit...Infielder Cameron Cannon leads the Wildcats in doubles (14), home runs (5), and extra-base hits (19) - the next closest player on the team is outfielder Donta Williams with 12 extra-base hits (7 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR)...Williams' four triples are tied for the most in the Pac-12.

ON THE BOARD: The Wildcats have scored at least one run in 65 straight games, with their last shutout loss coming all the way back on March 17, 2018 at Washington...The Cats 65-game scoring streak is the longest active streak among Pac-12 teams (next: Oregon, 35 games)...Even more impressive is the club's ability to avoid being shut out at home, with the Cats last blanking at Hi Corbett coming on April 25, 2015 against Cal - they have registered 115 straight home games without being kept off the scoreboard...During that 115 game stretch the Wildcats have been held to just one run twice, while posting 5+ runs 81 times...The Cats haven't been limited to just one run at home since May 15, 2016 against Arizona State.
