Arizona Opens Final Home Stretch Against New Mexico State

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team will open the final home stretch of the season on Wednesday night at Hi Corbett Field against New Mexico State.

Wednesday night's game is slated for 6 p.m. and tickets are available for purchase and can be secured HERE

LEADING OFF:

  • The Arizona Wildcats and the New Mexico State Aggies are set to meet for the second time this season on Wednesday night at Hi Corbett Field.

  • Arizona and New Mexico State have met 73 times previously with the Wildcats leading the series 64-9.  

  • Arizona defeated NMSU 13-3 in seven innings earlier this season (4/8).

  • Beau Sylvester's 15-game hitting streak came to an end on Saturday, however, he went 2-3 on Sunday and his batting average has ascended to .336 which ranks second on the team.

  • Cash Brennan combined to go 3-7 with a home run over the final two games of the weekend series against Kansas.

  • Tony Lira continues to pace the Arizona offense, as he leads the team in batting average (.348), hits (65), doubles (15), slugging percentage (.519), and on-base percentage (.430).

  • Over the past 14 games, senior Mathis Meurant is batting .306 with a home run, three doubles, five RBI, and six runs scored.

  • True freshman Caleb Danzeisen leads the team with 33 walks this season, while ranking second in on-base percentage (.411), and he has reached base in 32 of 36 games started this season.

LIRA LEADING THE WAY: Just as he has done all season long, redshirt-freshman Tony Lira continues to lead the way for Arizona offensively. Lira leads the Wildcats in a multitude of offensive categories, including OPS (.949), batting average (.348), hits (65), doubles (15), on-base percentage (.430), slugging percentage (.519), extra-base hits (21), while ranking second in runs (27). Lira has recorded a hit in 29 of the past 35 games, and he has collected at least one hit in 35 of 46 contests this season. He has put together 22 multi-hit performances, and he is batting an exceptional .441 with runners in scoring position this season (15-34). In addition to his stellar play at the plate, Lira has also been a vital piece defensively for Arizona, starting all 46 games at first base for the Wildcats.

FABULOUS FRESHMEN: Arizona has had five separate freshmen start 21 or more games this season, and they have continued to make a noteworthy impact. Redshirt freshmen Tony Lira and Nate Novitske and true freshmen Caleb Danzeisen have led Arizona offensively all season. Lira has been tremendous, while Novitske ranks third on the team in batting average (.303) and second in hits (56). Danzeisen is second on the squad in on-base percentage (.411), and has reached base in 32 of the 36 games that he has started this season. Redshirt freshman Jackson Forbes has started 26 games and he is fifth on the team in RBI (21). True freshman Cash Brennan is batting (.264) and is coming off a weekend series against Kansas in which he started the final two games and went a combined 3-7 at the plate and hit the first home run of his career.
