Men's Tennis Earns Split on Opening Day of H-E-B Tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas--- Arizona reached the semifinals and earned a split on day one of the 2015 H-E-B Tournament of Champions, Friday out at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Match 1- Arizona vs. DePaul (Opening Round)

Things started off well for Arizona (7-8) on Friday, as the Wildcats rallied to defeat DePaul 4-2 in the opening round of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions, Friday morning in Corpus Christi, Texas.

DePaul struck first in this one, as it claimed the doubles point after Alex Galoustian and Nathan de Veer defeated Matt Dunn and Shoki Kasahara 6-2 on court three. Jason Jaruvang and David Mushayev took down Kyle Johnson and Sten Leusink 6-4 on court two, but the Blue Demons claimed the point after David Vieyra and Jan-Willem Feilzer just managed to sneak by Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda on court one, 7-6 (7-4).

However, the Wildcats found their groove in singles play, as No. 29 Takeda (18-3, 10-0 Dual) extended his team-high win streak to 11 consecutive matches, as he blew by David Vieyra 6-1, 6-1 on court one to equalize things at 1-1.

Mushayev (8-9, 6-4 Dual) then put the Wildcats in front 2-1, as he easily took down Nathan de Veer 6-2, 6-1 on court three, before Jaruvang (12-10, 6-6 Dual) put UA on the brink of victory, earning a straight-set, 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Galoustian on court four.

No. 100 Shinde then showed why he's considered one of the best players in the country, as he clinched the win for Arizona, earning a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sten Leusink from the No. 2 spot to put the Cats up 4-1.

DePaul would eventually claim a victory on court six to bring the final to 4-2.

Match 2- Arizona vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Semifinals)

Arizona battled hard, but couldn't quite advance to the championship match, as it fell to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-0 in the tournament's semifinal round, Friday afternoon in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Peter Nagy handed No. 29 Naoki Takeda (18-4, 10-1 Dual) his first loss of the spring, as he earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court one.

Ricardo Mayagoitia then took down David Mushayev (8-10, 6-5 Dual) on court three, 6-2, 6-3, while Javier Pujol defeated Will Kneale (0-1, 0-1 Dual) on court five, 6-4, 6-4 to put the Islanders up 3-0.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi then clinched the match victory after Arthur Bedel defeated Shoki Kasahara (13-13, 6-7 Dual) 7-6, 6-4 from the No. 6 spot.

Arizona will look to rebound on Saturday, as it'll take on Southern Miss at 8:30 am MST in the tournament's third place match.
