TUCSON, Ariz.– Arizona kicked off their weekend at home for the Wildcat Spring Challenge picking up two wins. The Cats got their day started with a 3-2 win over No. 18 South Carolina followed up by another 3-2 win over FGCU.
Game 1 Arizona 3, No. 18 South Carolina 2
Ashlyn Zilliken and
Madeline Walker got the weekend started for Arizona picking up their match in straight sets, 21-17, 21-18 and giving Arizona the early 1-0 lead over the Gamecocks.
Sophia Winter and
Jamie Streit followed with a hard-fought match, dropping set one 14-21, the #4 pair fought hard to force a third set, 18-21, but came up short evening up the duel at 1-1.
Sadie Moore and
Brooke Boyko were next to finish, the #5 pair was able to take their match in straight-sets, 21-14, 21-17, giving Arizona a 2-1 lead in the duel. Adriana Nieves and
Meghan O'Meara came up short for Arizona dropping their match in three sets, 19-21, 21-16, 12-15, giving South Carolina the tying point to make the duel 2-2.
Carlie Cisneros and
Regan Holmer played a exciting match that they were able to come out on top in. The #1 pair took set one 21-17 before dropping set two 17-21. The pair fought hard to earn the clinching point, winning set three, 15-13 and giving Arizona the 3-2 duel win over No. 18 South Carolina.
Game 2 Arizona 3, FGCU 2
Regan Holmer and
Carlie Cisneros were the first get things going in the duel against FGCU. The #1 pair won in two sets, 21-12, 21-17, to give Arizona a 1-0 lead.
Ashlyn Zilliken and
Madeline Walker kept their momentum going, winning their match in straight-sets again, 21-19, 21-19, to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.
Sadie Moore and
Brooke Boyko finished up next dropping their match in straight-sets, 17-21, 17-21, to give the Eagles their first point of the duel. Adriana Nieves and
Meghan O'Meara played a competitive match dropping an extended first set 23-25, before dropping the second set 18-21, tying up the duel at 2-2.
Jamie Streit and
Sophia Winter were able to secure a win for the Cats, picking up a match clinching point to give Arizona a 3-2 win against FGCU. The #4 pair dropped set one 18-21 but were able to bounce back picking up set two 21-16 and the third set 15-11.
The Cats will be back in action tomorrow to face Colorado Mesa and No. 14 Hawaii. Arizona will honor it's seniors prior to the start of the game against Hawaii.
