Santiago Lobelo has been added to the University of Arizona women’s tennis coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach on August 4, 2015.
“We feel extremely fortunate to add Coach Lobelo to our staff,” said Maes. “He is as passionate about college tennis as coach Matteucci and I and we are all looking forward to working together. His experience at the Division I level along with his coaching history at several top-notch junior academies are major assets for our program.”
Lobelo comes to Arizona after serving as a student assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman University during the 2014-15 season, where he helped lead the women’s program to the 2015 MEAC championship and just the school’s third NCAA Tournament berth in program history. On the men’s side, he aided the Wildcats to a second place finish in the MEAC and assisted the athletes tactically on the court and off the court.
“It's an honor for me to be part of the women's tennis program and to be able to represent such a prestigious and well-known institution like the University of Arizona,” Lobelo said. “I am really excited to work with coach Maes and coach Matteucci and help guide the women's program to new heights this upcoming season. Go Wildcats!”
In addition to his work as a student assistant coach, Lobelo has also served as a coach at the prestigious Event Tennis Academy and Rick Macci Tennis Academy each of the last four summers.
Lobelo was a four-year member of the Bethune-Cookman men’s tennis program. He was named the team’s captain during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, while he was named to the ALL-MEAC First Team in 2012 and the All-MEAC Second Team in 2013.
The Bogota, Columbia native graduated from Bethune-Cookman in 2015 with double bachelor degrees in both business administration and international finance.
