Arizona Upsets No. 20 Stanford For a Victory on Senior Night

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 25 Arizona Wildcats defeated the No. 20 Stanford Cardinals by 195.725 to 195.025 for their first win of the 2018 season. Arizona was led by their three seniors, Madison Cindric, Victoria Ortiz, and Kennady Schneider, who all earned a 9.850 or higher on their respective events.
 
"I went into this night saying that I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to two seniors," said head coach John Court. "And that's exactly what happened, it came down to Maddy and Kennady on floor. All three of our seniors showed strength, leadership, and passion in today's meet. You could feel that the team had their back tonight, which is why we were victorious. We still have work to do in the gym this week, but overall I am very pleased, and I am very proud, of this team."
 
Arizona Gets Ahead Early:
The Cats hit the vault table ready to go at the start of today's competition. Maddi Leydin started off with a 9.800, a new season and career high. She was followed by Courtney Cowles who earned a 9.775, Lauryn Mattson who earned a new season and career high score of 9.875, Madison Cindric who earned a 9.850, and Payton Bellows who scored a 9.875.
 
The Cats tied their season high vault score with a 49.175, previously earned against No. 3 Utah on Feb. 26.
 
Wildcats Persevere Through Injury:
Arizona finished the meet on floor as per usual, however during competition freshman Payton Bellows was injured on her routine. The Cats regrouped their thoughts and came out stronger then ever. Bellows was followed on floor by Madison Cindric who scored a 9.850 and Kennady Schneider who earned a 9.850.
 
The Cats Recognize Their Three Seniors:
"Today was very exciting for us," said senior Kennady Schneider. "We only get one senior night in our entire lives, so we didn't want to take any moment for granted. The team had our back today, and it almost felt like they were competing for us, which was a really special feeling to have."
 
As the Cats begin to wrap up their home meets for the 2018 season, they recognized their three seniors, Madison Cindric, Victoria Ortiz, and Kennady Schneider, for their outstanding achievements over the past four years.
 
Cindric currently hold career highs of 9.875 – V, 9.925 – UB, 9.925 – BB, 9.875 – FX, and 39.400 – AA.
 
"Our seniors are amazing," said sophomore Maddi Leydin. "We all really look up to them and it's nice to be able to celebrate their accomplishments tonight."
 
Ortiz holds career highs of 9.950 – UB, and 9.850 – BB.
 
"It was really great to bring home a win for our seniors," said junior Danielle Spencer. "They've put so much into this program, and to be able to let them end their senior meet on a high is such a great feeling."
 
Schneider holds career highs of 9.800 – UB, 9.850 – BB, and 9.925 – FX.
 
"Kennady is the heart and soul of this team," said head coach John Court. "She gives 100% into all aspects of her life, and it has been an honor to coach her these past four years."
 
Victoria Ortiz Takes Home Gold on Bars:
Senior Victoria Ortiz earned the first place title on the uneven bars in today's competition against Stanford with a score of 9.850. Ortiz was followed by Stanford's Kyla Bryant who earned second with a score of 9.825, and Arizona's Danielle Spencer who earned third place with a score of 9.800.
 
Madison Cindric Earns Second Place in the All-Around:
Senior Madison Cindric earned second place in the all-around competition with an all-around score of 39.325. She followed Stanford's Kyla Bryant who took home gold with an all-around score of 39.400.
