Prep: Attended St. Stithians Boys College under coach Peter Williams where he was named the top swimmer during his senior year and was listed as one of the top-five male swimmers in Gauteng, South Africa... Holds the South Africa National Age Group Record (17 and 18 years) for the 200-meter freestyle as well as the 400-meter freestyle (18 years)... Also Holds Gauteng records in the 100, 200 and 400-meter freestyle, as well as the 400-meter IM.

National/ International Competition- Was a six-time National South African Junior Champion in 2001 and 2002...At the 2005 Senior Nationals, was the South African champion in the 200-meter freestyle and finished third in the 400-meter freestyle... In 2006, defended his title as the 200-meter freestyle champion and placed third in the 100-meter freestyle.

Personal: Born Jean Basson on October 10, 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa... Son of Koos and Esme Basson, who both graduated from the University of Bloemfontein... Enjoys spending his free time outdoors and with friends... Plans on pursuing a degree in business.
