2020 Season
In his fifth season with Arizona, McCreary helped Arizona to a final national rank of No. 27 coached the uneven bars team to a national rank of No. 31. He helped senior Christina Berg earn All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention on the uneven bars. McCreary earned Region 4 Assistant Coach of the Year for his work with the team's culture, academics, and recruiting efforts. 
 
2019 Season
During McCreary’s fourth season at Arizona, he helped the GymCats qualify to the NCAA Corvallis Regional and helped Christina Berg and Danielle Spencer qualify to Regionals as individual competitors on the uneven bars.
 
Before Arizona
Prior to Arizona, McCreary worked with Washington for nine seasons and was named the West Region co-Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. He also served as an assistant coach at Oregon State University earlier in his career.
 
“I feel extremely honored to be a part of the staff at Arizona,” said McCreary. “Knowing the goals of the program and the dedication to the accomplishment of those goals, I look forward with excitement to the challenges ahead."
 
Before entering collegiate athletics, McCreary served as head coach and competitive team program director for the Arizona Sunrays in Phoenix from 2000-2005. Prior to his time in Phoenix, he worked with West Valley Gymnastics in Campbell, Calif. and owned Gymagic Gymnastics in Sacramento, Calif. from 1987-1996.
 
“I have always loved coaching and teaching,” added McCreary. “I enjoy being around motivated, passionate athletes and people in general. Gymnastics is my vehicle to do what I am truly passionate about.”
 
Along with his 20 years of experience at the elite level of gymnastics, McCreary also worked for eight years on the USA Gymnastics Elite Program Committee.
 
McCreary’s coaching philosophy is simple, to keep the love of the sport alive while maintaining an environment of accomplishment through efficient hard work with high and consistent standards for all of his athletes. McCreary strives to motivate his athletes to compete at the highest level and reach their full potential as a team.
 
“I have known John for quite a while,” said McCreary. “He is an amazing coach as well as a great person. His passion for the sport of gymnastics is infectious. He truly believes in Arizona’s potential to be one of the best programs in the country and he is willing to do whatever it takes to make that potential a reality. I am excited to be a part of this journey!”
