TUCSON, Ariz. - Chris Lewis passed for three first-half touchdowns, and
Tank Williams figured in two fumble returns for scores as No. 16 Stanford
rebounded from a tough loss with a 51-37 rout of Arizona on Saturday night.
The Wildcats made it close by scoring three TDs in a 5:16 span of the fourth
quarter, but Cardinal coach Tyrone Willingham fixed that by inserting
first-stringers who came out after taking a 51-16 lead.
Teyo Johnson, a 6-foot-7 sophomore who plays varsity basketball and is a
backup quarterback for the Cardinal, caught two of Lewis' scoring throws and
set up Stanford's go-ahead score with a 24-yard reception in the first quarter.
Johnson, redshirted last year, finished with season highs of eight catches
for 116 yards.
The Cardinal (6-2, 5-2 Pac-10) were ranked 10th a week ago, but dropped
after a 42-28 loss to Washington.
They got back on track for a significant bowl bid by opening a 27-13
halftime lead and scoring twice on defense in the third quarter.
Williams went 25 yards with a fumble he picked out of the air on the first
play of the third, and then sacked Arizona's Jason Johnson, who fumbled. Coy
Wire returned it 89 yards for a TD that made it 41-16 lead with 7:32 left.
Kenneth Tolon II made it 48-16 with 3:54 to go in the third on a spectacular
71-yard run that began when he was almost brought down by Austin Uku, but spun
out of the tackle and threaded his way downfield to the end zone.

Lewis, making his third straight start since Randy Fasani injured his knee
Oct. 20, threw scoring passes of 23 and 3 yards to Teyo Johnson and 26 yards to
Luke Powell in the first half. Mike Biselli kicked three field goals.
Clarence Farmer scored on a 43-yard pass from Jason Johnson and runs of 20
and 66 yards, and Sean Keel had field goals of 22, 52 and 43 yards for the
Wildcats (4-6, 1-6), who have six conference losses for the first time.
Farmer had 141 yards on 12 carries, improving to 1,071 yards this season.
But his two rushing TDs came in the last 10 minutes after the game had been
decided.
Malosi Leonard blocked a Stanford punt with 4:22 remaining, and John Rattay,
Johnson's backup, threw a 21-yard scoring strike to Leonard on the first snap,
getting the Wildcats within 51-37.
Arizona played the Cardinal even for a quarter, but fell apart after Lewis
broke a 10-10 tie with his pass to a diving Powell 55 seconds into the second
quarter.
The Wildcats got a break midway through the first quarter when Alex Luna
stripped the ball from Allen and Lance Briggs recovered on the Stanford 43. On
the first play, Johnson rolled right and came back to Farmer on the left
sideline.
The tailback easily outran linebacker Matt Friedrichs to the end zone,
giving the Wildcats a 7-3 lead with 8:28 left in the quarter.
But Friedrichs got even by causing two of Arizona's six fumbles, including
the game-turning turnover by Bobby Wade, who coughed up the ball that Williams
caught on the fly for a 34-16 lead 14 seconds into the second half.
