PALO ALTO, Calif.- The top-ranked Arizona women's golf team opened the first round of the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate by posting a 19-over par 307 on Friday. The mark is good enough for a seventh-place tie with New Mexico in the 17-team field and is 14 strokes behind opening day leader UCLA.
The three day event is being played at Stanford's home golf course and features nine of the 10 Pac-10 schools in the field, along with top 15 teams Vanderbilt, New Mexico and Georgia.
Playing without senior Laura Myerscough, who is competing at the Women's World Amateur Team Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, freshman Erica Blasberg was Arizona's top finisher in the opening round in Palo Alto on Friday with a one-over 73 on the 6,218 yard course. Her individual effort placed her tied for seventh in the field along with four other golfers and just two strokes back of a four-way tie for first at one-under par.
Seniors Anne Lee and Julia Kraschiski posted scores of five-over 77 and six-over 78, respectively, to place them in a tie for 30th and 36th place. Sophomore Mar Garcia carded an opening round score of seven-over 79 to place her in a tie for 43rd.
The event will continue on Saturday with another 18-hole round before concluding on Sunday.
