No. 47 Arizona Men's Tennis Stumbles on the Road Against the Cardinal
Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's tennis fell to the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 0-7, on Friday. The Wildcats were swept in the singles and doubles competition. The Cats are now 7-5 on the season, 0-4 in the Pac-10.
On the singles side, playing in the first position, senior Steven Capriati lost to K.J. Hippensteel, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Capriati made it a tough match by taking one of the sets, 5-7. Sophomore Whi Kim in the second spot fell to David Martin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Junior Tom Lloyd, playing in the third slot, lost to Ryan Haviland, 6-4, 6-0. Sophomore Carl Hagman, playing in the fourth position, was defeated by Scott Lipsky, 6-2, 6-3. Competing in the fifth spot, senior Bruno Arapovic struggled against Sam Warburg, losing, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Roeland Brateanu fell to Phil Sheng, 6-3, 7-6, in the sixth position.
Arizona dropped all three doubles matches, therefore Stanford won the doubles point. The 60th-ranked team of Capriati and Hagman fell to top-ranked Lipsky and Martin, 8-3. In the second position, Lloyd and Kim lost to Haviland and Hippensteel, 8-3. Freshman Colin O'Grady and Sophomore Arnaud Agniel, competing in the third spot, gave the team of Joe Kao and Warburg a good match but eventually fell to them, 9-8.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, March 9, at 12:00 p.m., when they face the No. 10 California Golden Bears.
