A contest of 40-game winners in Alicia Hollowell of Arizona and Brooke Mitchell of Louisiana-Lafayette turned into a one-sided affair as the sophomore Wildcat All-American tossed a one-hit shutout Friday afternoon in leading top-ranked Arizona to a 4-0 victory in the Region 1 Softball Championships.
Arizona (55-4) put itself in the Region's semi-final against Oklahoma at 11:30 a.m. (PDT) Saturday, while UL (56-7) moved to an elimination game against Temple immediately following the loss to Arizona.
Hollowell improved to 41-2 while Mitchell gave up seven hits and emerged with a 42-4 record. Hollowell, the nation's leader in strikeouts per innings, had eight. She threw no-hit ball until Holly Tankersley slipped a single through the right side in the bottom of the sixth.
The 41 victories broke her own season record of 40-5 set last year as a freshman. She now has 493 strikeouts, also bettering her own season record each time out.
The Cats staged a two-out rally to take a 3-0 lead in the third. Caitlin Lowe drew a walk, Allyson Von Liechtenstein slapped a single to left. Wendy Allen came up with a single to center, scoring Lowe, and the runners moved up on a high throw to the plate, and then Mackenzie Vandergeest socked a two-run single down the left-field line.
UA's Crystal Farley reached on an error and Lowe drew a walk to put runners on with no outs in the fifth. Von Liechtenstein hit into a force, Allen flied to left and Vandergeest drove in another run with a single to left. UA might have made more of it, but Von Liechenstein was thrown out trying to reach third after a throw to the plate.
Arizona Head Coach Larry Ray - "That was a much better performance. We came out fired up. I am very proud of the team. We still have a ways to go though. I am very pleased with the way Ally (Von Liechtenstein) filled in."
"We need everyone to step it up a little bit, but we have very capable players who can fill her (Autumn Champion) shoes."
Outfileder Allyson Von Liechtenstein - "They are big shoes to fill. I was nervous, but I was ready. I was nervous in my first at-bat, but then I was ready to go."
Pitcher Alicia Hollowell - "I try to go out and keep them off the scoreboard. No matter what, that's what I do."
Catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest - We were more fired up and ready to go. We stayed up and played some great defense. I had a couple good at-bats, but I always seem to have to put some pressure on myself."
