Goldman Advances to Finals

LAS VEGAS - The University of Arizona men's tennis player Jay Goldman secured a place in the finals of Flight One of singles competition tomorrow after the senior edged out Nikolas Zogaj of Arkansas in the semifinals. David Humphreys and Borja Malo clinched their quarterfinals match in doubles action, but came up short in the semifinals at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
"Tough conditions today with the weather, but the tough persevered," assistant coach Tom Lloyd said. "We had plenty of chances and opportunities in doubles today, but fell short of the finish line. Jay did a good job hanging through the tough wind conditions to advance."
In doubles competition, Humphreys and Malo cruised to an 8-3 win over Alex Sonesson and Brian McPhee of Cal Poly in the quarterfinal round, but struggled in the semifinals against Mehdi Bouras and Bernard Schoeman of UNLV and was edged out 8-5.
Goldman, competing in his third fall tournament of the season, battled Nikolas Zogaj of Arkansas in the semifinal round. The Worcester, Mass. native fell in a close 6-7 first set, battled back in the second set to win 6-3 and then cruised to a 6-3 third set victory. Goldman will face Alex Stamchev of Auburn in the finals tomorrow at 10 a.m.
