Wildcats Shut Out Lobos, 7-0

TUCSON -- After clinching the doubles point winning two out the three matches and sweeping in singles action the No. 43-ranked Wildcats cruised to their third consecutive win of the season and fourth at home. The Wildcats blanked New Mexico 7-0 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, handing the Lobos their first loss of the season.

"Across the board I thought all the guys played well today," said head coach Tad Berkowitz, who played for the Lobos from 1993-96. "We have a very tough match on Sunday so it's back to work tomorrow."

The Wildcats claimed the doubles point on courts one and three, with the Lobos winning on court two. On court one, the dynamic duo of junior Jason Zafiros and freshman Andre Vidaller sealed their match on court one against Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar due to an injury.

The Wildcat senior duo of Borja Malo and Jay Goldman put Arizona on the board by notching the doubles point on court three against the New Mexico pair of Joe Wood and Carl Ho. The Wildcats built a 4-2 lead and captured the next two games before Wood and Ho earned the next game. After that Malo and Goldman roared through the next two games to win 8-3.

On court two, the New Mexico pair of Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson topped the Wildcat freshman duo of Kieren Thompson and Mario Urquidi. The two teams were tied at 4-4 but Phillips and Anderson pulled away at 6-4 and eventually won 8-5.

In singles action, the Wildcats tallied their win on court four after Vidaller won in straight sets against Berg. The freshman bounced back after being down 1-2 to start the set. After that Vidaller built a 4-3 lead and then finished the set 6-3. In the second set, it was all Vidaller, powering his way to a 6-1 win.

Senior Andres Carrasco helped the Wildcats build a 3-0 lead against the Lobos in the No. 2 spot. Carrasco jumped out to a 2-1 lead against New Mexico's Anderson. Anderson evened the set at 2-2 before Carrasco rolled on to the 6-2 first set win. In the second set, the Cabrils, Barcelona Spain native blanked Anderson 6-0.

Zafiros downed Ho in straight sets to clinch the match for the Wildcats. In the first set, the Wildcat junior built a 3-2 lead and sealed the next two games before Ho fought back taking the next two games. After that it was all Zafiros securing the first set 6-4. In the second set, the Bradenton, Fla. native rolled out to a 2-0 lead before Ho notched a game, after that Zafiros propelled his way to a 6-1 second set win. Zafiros improves to 5-0 in singles dual match action.

The Wildcats built a 5-0 lead after Goldman soared through his first set 6-4 against Phillips. In the second set, the senior built a 2-1 lead and never looked back, clinching the next four games, rolling to a 6-1 win.

Urquidi sealed his match in the No. 6 spot against Mads Hegelund in a three-setter. The freshman swept in the first set 6-0. In the second, Hegelund and Urquidi were evened at 3-3, before Hegelund powered his way to three straight games to win 6-3. In the third, Urquidi fought back to capture the 6-1 win.

Senior Geoff Embry finished the day in the No. 5 spot and sealed the seventh win for the Cats. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Embry bounced back to win 6-3 and then went on to win 10-6 in the breaker.

The Wildcats improve to 4-2 and remain undefeated at home. The Lobos drop their first match of the season to move to 5-1.

Next up for the Wildcats is the No. 50-ranked San Diego Toreros at 12 p.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
