Cats Fall, 6-1, to Ducks

The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Oregon Ducks on Sunday. The match marked the second loss in Pac-12 play for the Wildcats.

The day began with doubles play where the Cats dropped matches on courts one and three and the doubles point went to the Ducks.

First to finish was the team of Naoki Takeda on court three. The Wildcat duo fell behind 5-0 to Alex Rovello and Daan Maasland before clinching a win. Rovello and Maasland earned the next two games, bringing the match to 7-1 when Thompson and Takeda earned three straight. Rovello and Maasland claimed the next game to win the match, 8-4.

On court one, Fredrik Ask and Sumeet Shinde were next to finish in their match against Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen. The teams traded wins to tie at one and two games before Ask and Shinde took a 3-2 lead. Cambier and Mullen answered with the next three wins before Ask and Shinde claimed another game. The teams traded wins with the Cats battling back to remain within one game of the Duck duo before Cambier and Mullen clinched two straight to clinch the match, 8-6. The match marked the second win for the Ducks and clinched the doubles point in their favor.

Giacomo Miccini and Mario Urquidi teamed up to take on Daniel Sardu and Aaron Clissold on court two. The junior duo took the 2-0 lead before Sardu and Clissold claimed two straight to tie it at two. Arizona reclaimed a two game lead at 4-2 but Sardu and Clissold battled back to tie it once again. The Duck team claimed another game to earn their first lead of the match but Miccini and Urquidi came back to tie it at five. The teams tied three more times at six, seven, and eight games before entering a tiebreaker. Miccini and Urquidi fell behind 3-0 to begin the tiebreaker but fought back to tie at three. The Wildcat duo continued to earn points and claimed the 5-3 lead before Sardu and Clissold answered with another win. The point would mark their last as Miccini and Urquidi earned two straight to win the tiebreaker, 7-4.

In singles play, Shinde was first to finish in his match against Maasland. In the first set, Shinde fell behind 1-0 but battled back to tie at one. Maasland answered with the next three wins before Shinde earned another game. The win would mark the last for Shinde as Maasland clinched the set, 6-2. In the second set, Shinde was able to secure only one win as Maasland clinched the set, 6-1.

On court six, Carlos Bermudez was second to finish in his first match of the 2013 season. Bermudez, a Tucson local, dominated the first set against Brent Chin, claiming a 6-0 victory. In the second set, Bermudez claimed the first game but Chin fought back to tie it at one. The two tied once again at two before Bermudez earned a three game lead. Chin earned the next three games to tie the set at five but Bermudez answered with the next two wins to clinch the set at match, 7-5. The win would be the only point for Arizona on the day.

Next to finish was Urquidi on court five. The junior from El Paso, Texas fought a back and forth battle with Sardu, falling behind 2-1 in the first set but coming back to claim the 3-2 lead. Sardu earned the next four games and clinched the set, 6-3. In the second set, Urquidi claimed the 2-1 lead but Sardu answered with the next two wins. The wins would mark the last for Sardu as Urquidi clinched the set, 6-3. The match entered a third set where Urquidi was unable to secure a win as Sardu clinched the 6-0 win.

On court two, Ask was next to finish in his match against Mullen. Ask, a junior from Oslo, Norway, fell behind 3-0 before earning a game. The two traded wins to bring the set to 5-3 in Mullen's favor when he clinched another win to earn the set, 6-3. In the second set, Ask fell behind 2-0 before claiming a win. Mullen answered with the next game but Ask battled back to tie the set at three. The two traded wins to tie at four before Ask pulled ahead to clinch the set, 6-4. The match entered a third set where the two fought a battle of ties at one, two, three, four and five games before Mullen clinched two straight to win the set, 7-5. The match marked the fourth point for the Ducks and clinched the match in their favor.

With the match clinched, matches on courts one and three entered super-tiebreakers.

On court three, Thompson dropped the first set, 7-6(5), to Rovello, but fought back to earn the second set, 6-3. In the tiebreaker, the two tied at six before Rovello earned the win, edging Thompson, 10-6.

Last to finish was Miccini on court one. Miccini clinched the first set, 7-5, against Cambier but dropped the second, 6-4. In the super-tiebreaker, the two tied at two and three points before Cambier began to pull ahead. Miccini dropped the super-tiebreaker, 10-5.

With the loss Arizona falls to 0-2 in Pac-12 play and Oregon improves to 1-1. 

The Cats will be back in action on Friday, April 5 as they hit the road to play two Pac-12 foes. On Friday, the Wildcats will take on the USC Trojans at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Cats will play to UCLA Bruins at 1 p.m.
