No. 21 Boise State Stops No. 12 Arizona in VIZIO Fiesta Bowl

GLENDALE, Ariz. – No. 21 Boise State (12-2) was able to hold off another Arizona (10-4) miraculous comeback as it won the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl, 38-30, in dramatic fashion.

Boise State quarterback Grant Hedrick finished the game 24-of-34 for 309 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also added 29 yards on the ground. Hedrick completed 17-of-18 passes in the first half for 272 yards, while completing his first 14 of the game.

Hedrick's main target and Offensive Player of the Game Thomas Sperbeck had a big game himself, hauling in 12 catches for 199 yards. Running back Jay Ajayi also had a phenomenal game, tallying 22 carries for 134 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Game Tanner Vallejo finished with 14 total tackles for the Broncos. He added 1.5 sacks as well.

For Arizona, quarterback Anu Solomon finished the game 28-of-49 for 335 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while rushing for 32 yards and a score, as well. Receiver Cayleb Jones hauled in eight receptions for 117 yards, and Samajie Grant added 69 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Nick Wilson carried the ball 19 times for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Both Tra'Mayne Bondurant and Scooby Wright III had good days on the defensive end for the Wildcats. Bondurant finished with 11 total tackles, two for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Wright added 10 tackles of his own and two for a loss, as well.

Running back Terris Jones-Grigsby was selected as the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award. 

Boise State got off to a quick start on their first possession after a 56-yard touchdown run by Ajayi, capping a four-play, 78-yard drive, which took 1:42.

After an Arizona punt, the Broncos got right back at it with a 57-yard touchdown pass from Hedrick to Chaz Anderson, making the score 14-0 Boise State with 9:17 left in the first quarter.

Arizona punted again, and again Ajayi found the end zone for Boise State. He scored on a 16-yard rush to make the score 21-0 with 5:12 left in the first quarter. The drive went for six plays, 80 yards and 2:11.

The Wildcats responded nicely after Solomon punched in a one-yard touchdown run (11 plays, 65 yards, 3:37) to make the score 21-7 in Boise State's favor with 1:23 left in the first quarter.

Arizona got their first defensive stop of the afternoon, but Solomon threw an interception deep in Arizona territory and Boise State took over.

Ajayi collected his third touchdown of the day after a one-yard run to the corner of the end zone, giving Boise State a 28-7 lead with 11:56 left in the second quarter.

Wilson scored for Arizona on a one-yard run to make the score 28-14 Boise State. The drive took 13 plays, 83 yards and 3:49. Wilson gained 42 yards on the ground during the possession.

With about a minute left in the first half, Hedrick threw his first incompletion of the game with a Cam Denson interception. Denson returned it to the Boise State 30-yard line. Casey Skowron then drilled a 42-yard field goal with 30 seconds left to cut the Boise State lead to 28-17.

In just 23 seconds, Boise State drove 57 yards on four plays and added a 36-yard field goal by Dan Goodale right before halftime to make the score 31-17.

After a three-and-out by each team to start the second half, Arizona drove 50 yards in 14 plays and 4:18 and finished the drive off with a 24-yard Skowron field goal. That made the score 31-20 in Boise State's favor with 9:11 left in the third quarter.

A few more empty possessions by both teams later, Solomon threw his second interception of the day and Boise State's Beau Martin returned it 16 yards for a touchdown. This gave the Broncos a 38-20 lead with 1:57 left in the third quarter.

Solomon responded with a 51-yard touchdown pass to Grant to make the score 38-27 with 41 seconds left in the third quarter. The drive went for five plays and 75 yards and 1:16 off the clock.

With 9:17 left in the fourth quarter, Bondurant forced and recovered an Ajayi fumble and the Wildcats took over at their own 35-yard line. Shortly after, Skowron added a 32-yard field goal to make the score 38-30 Boise State with 6:11 left in the game.

The game came down to the wire after a spectacular 43-yard grab from Cayleb Jones to bring Arizona to Boise State's eight-yard line with under a minute left in the game. On third down though, Solomon was sacked and the clock ran out.
