Czarniak Advances to Black Draw Finals After Competitive Day Two at the SDSU Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The Wildcats faced more tough competition during day two of the San Diego State University Fall Classic II, but managed to win two big singles matches to give the team a 2-4 record on the day as well as some positive momentum heading into tomorrow's matches.
“The team had another competitive day,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We continue to be exposed to the pressure of no-ad scoring and that will only make us stronger in the spring. Win of lose, we are playing hard and learning something from every experience.”
Junior Samantha Czarniak will head to the black draw finals after besting CSUN junior Vivian Lin in straight sets (6-0, 6-3). Czarniak wasn't the only Wildcat to beat a CSUN junior in straight sets on Saturday as sophomore Devin Chyphya defeated Mickey Hsu in the red draw consolation semi finals (6-0, 6-0).
Kristen Poei defeated senior Inge Hendrikx in the white draw (1-6, 2-6), preventing Arizona from defeating their third CSUN junior of the night, while freshman Sophia Thomas lost a tough match in the pink draw to SDSU junior Taylor Lederman (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).
The Wildcats lost both doubles matches of the day by a small margin. The newcomer tandem of Czarniak and Thomas lost in the black draw semi finals to SDSU's Lederman and Isabelle Hoorn by a score of 7-5, and Hendrikx and Chyphya dropped their red draw consolation semi finals match to UC Irvine's Arisha Ladhani and Stephanie Hazell in nail-biting fashion (7-6(3)).
Today's play gives Arizona a singles record of 4-4 and a doubles record of 1-3 in the SDSU Fall Classic II. The tournament's third and final day begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with doubles competition.
