TUCSON, Ariz.-- The University of Arizona's women's golf team opened up its 2015-2016 season Sunday morning at the opening day of the Annika Intercollegiate Classic. The Wildcats sit in a tie for sixth place at 2-under par, 10 shots behind leader USC.
The Wildcats posted a combined score of 286 on the Watson Course at the Reunion Resort in Orlando, FLA.
Senior Lindsey Weaver and junior Wanasa Zhou led the Cats, each shooting a 2-under 70. Weaver, occupying the top spot in the lineup for Arizona, birdied three of her final five holes to post her score. Zhou sat at 1-over through 14 holes, but birdied 15, 16 and 17 to get to 2-under, before sinking a par on 18.
Weaver and Zhou are currently in a tie for 15th overall. USC's Katelyn Dambaugh shot a 7-under 65 to occupy first place.
Also for the Wildcats, sophomore Krystal Quihuis and freshman Gigi Stoll posted a 1-over 73 and are tied for 34th place. Stoll's round included an eagle on the par-5 14th. Sophomore Natalia Forero shot a 79 and is tied for 56th.
"The ladies had a slow start today, but we were able to finish strong and move up the leaderboard," Coach Laura Ianello said. "Lindsey and Wanasa led the way with two solid rounds and then Krystal and Gigi fought hard to finish their rounds with their best scores possible. The golf course is playinig easy and with the top teams in the country competing it could be anyone's game."
With two more days to compete, the Cats are looking to gain some momentum and finish strong.
"We look forward to coming out strong tomorrow and the having a chance to scale up the leaderboard," Ianello said. "We are capable of shooting low in this course and with some good strategy and patience, we will be successful."
The Wildcats will tee off again for round two tomorrow at 8:00 am MST.
