Cats Jump to Third Place at Annika Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz.—The University of Arizona women's golf team has jumped up to third place at the Annika Intercollegiate Classic. The Cats are 9-under par, still 20 shots behind leader USC.
The Wildcats posted a combined score of 281, five shots lower than their opening score of 286 in Sunday's opening day.
Junior Wanasa Zhou shot phenomenally Monday with a score of 5-under 67 and is tied for fifth place overall at 7-under. Her total after both rounds is 137.
“I asked her after the round how she felt and she said she felt consistent," coach Laura Ianello said. "She shot very well, she didn't have any bogeys and stayed patient. She didn't try to do anything special and just stuck to how she knows how to play. She has been shooting really well last two weeks in qualifiers. She played really solid and didn't make any mistakes today.”
Senior Lindsey Weaver and Sophomore Krystal Quihuis both had an equally good day, each shooting a 1-under par with a score of 71. Weaver is tied for 12th place and Quihuis is tied for 23rd. Both have climbed in the rankings and improved as the tournament has progressed. USC's Robynn Ree shot a 6-under 66 to jump to first place at 10-under, three shots ahead of Zhou.
Freshman Gigi Stoll finished with a even-par 72 for the day and is tied for 29th. Sophomore Natalia Forero shot a 81 and is in 60th place.
The Cats have definitely gained the momentum needed to jump three spots in the rankings after the second round.
“The girls did great, Weaver is steady as can be," Ianello said. "Our freshman Gigi Stoll started off slow but she hung in there today and continues to play each round the best she can. I think Krystal is a little frustrated because she is playing well and is perfectly capable of finishing strong. Our sophomore Natalia Forero has struggled a bit but I know that she can come back tomorrow and finish with a solid final round. I am just trying to get the girls to stay patient."
As the Annika Intercollegiate wraps up, Tuesday being the last day of competition, the Cats are looking to finish strong. They are only three strokes behind second-place Texas A&M.
"They are playing with confidence," Ianello said. "Right now USC is playing really well. They are playing the best college golf you can play and I know that we can have a day where we shoot a 10-under par and catch them. Any time the team scores under par is good.”
The Wildcats will tee off one more time for round three tomorrow morning at 8:00 am MST.
