Day Two of the Wildcat Invitational in the Books
10/01/2016 | Women's Tennis
TUCSON, Ariz. – After a rainy day on Friday, the sun came to play at the Wildcat Invitational, as did Arizona. The day commenced with the conclusion of the doubles brackets, and finished out with the third round of the singles tournament.
"I thought today was a productive day for our team," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We are definitely seeing improvements in the singles and breaking through some barriers. In doubles, we have a lot of work to do, but ultimately, we play these fall events to find out where our focus needs to be."
In the doubles Red Flight, Camila Wesbrooks and Alexandra Taylor began their morning with a clutch victory over Rosell/Kato of UTSA (7-5). That victory placed them into the finals, but they would eventually lose to New Mexico's Burgeuiere/Copas (6-4) and would take home second place. On the consolation side of the red flight, Devin Chypyha and Samantha Czarniak took on Ibrahimovic/Hallgren of UTSA and walked away with the victory (6-0). In the fifth place game, they battled NAU's Tomasetti/Lewandowska but fell just short (7-6(3)).
In the Blue Flight, Sophia Thomas and Maggie Cohen fell in the semifinal match to NAU's Rochin/Granville (6-0) and dropped the third place match against Visscher/Bennett of UTEP (6-3). Elena Schneider, paired up with UTEP's Maria Paula Medina, started off with a consolation battle versus Cabrera/Menon of UTSA. They pulled out a close match (6-4) to move onto the fifth place match where they would square off against Madroñal/Tiwari. The duo eventually suffered defeat by a score of 6-2.
In the singles Red Flight, Samantha Czarniak was locked in a tight semifinal battle against Miriam Rosell of UTSA. After dropping the first set, Czarniak battled back and took the last two sets to clinch a berth in the championship (4-6,6-2, 6-3).
In the singles Blue Flight, Sophia Thomas battled against Raven Bennett of UTEP and wasn't able to advance, as she fell in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Elena Schneider faced up against Eirene Granville of NAU in the consolation bracket and rallied back from a first set loss to win (1-6, 7-5, 6-1). Alex Taylor also competed in a consolation match and was defeated at the hands of UTEP's Maria Paula Medina (6-4, 6-4).
UP NEXT: Sunday will consist of singles action only, as the tournament draws to a close. Czarniak will play in the championship game. Thomas is set for a third place battle with Ibrahimovic (UTSA). Schneider is matched up against Medina (UTEP) in the consolation final (fifth place). Taylor will play the seventh place match against Granville (NAU). All the matches are scheduled for 9 a.m. MST.
