TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wildcats added another future member to their team on Wednesday as head coach Vicky Maes received a National Letter of Intent from Gitte Heynemans of Belgium to play tennis for the University of Arizona.
"I am very excited to bring Gitte Heynemans into our program," Maes said. "During the recruiting process, Gitte clicked with our team and staff right away and we all wanted her to become part of our family. She embodies everything we look for in our student-athletes: driven both on and off the court. Gitte is extremely talented and will grow a lot as a player and a young woman here at Arizona. I predict she will make an immediate impact, and have a very successful collegiate career."
Heynemans will join Marie Van Aelst as another Belgian member of the Cats. She brings a ton of international tournament experience to the team as she has participated in events in Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, Turkey, and Germany. She is ranked eighth by the International Tennis Federation in the Belgian Junior Circuit.
"Arizona truly impressed me with its amazing, enthusiastic, warm and friendly people," said Heynemans. "It is a beautiful and sunny living environment and a terrific tennis program. I really look forward to the next four years of my life studying and playing tennis for the Cats in the United States."
Heynemans was a highly sought after recruit as she chose Arizona over highly ranked Florida State and Alabama. She is the first addition to the Cats' 2017 freshman class.
