No. 19 Arizona Outlasts Grand Canyon 64-54

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Kobi Simmons scored 13 points, Rawle Alkins added 11 points and eight rebounds, and No. 19 Arizona outlasted Grand Canyon 64-54 on Wednesday night.

Arizona (9-2) started ragged, built a 16-point lead in the first half and allowed Grand Canyon to claw most of the way back due to a rash of turnovers.

The Wildcats had 19 turnovers overall and struggled shooting in the second half before wearing down the Antelopes for their 39th straight non-conference home win.

Grand Canyon (5-5) kept No. 11 Louisville within reach until late last week and did the same against Arizona.

DeWayne Russell had 19 points, but had to work for it against the physical Wildcats. He hit 8 of 21 shots, including 1 of 7 from 3-point range.

Oscar Frayer scored all 16 of his points in the second half for Grand Canyon.

Russell came into the game as the nation's second-leading scorer at 25.4 points per game and had 42 against Louisville, one of the nation's best defensive teams.

The Wildcats played the 5-foot-11, 155-pound senior guard physically, bumping him at both ends of the court, hounding his every move on offense. Allen knocked Russell off-balance with a hard bump on Arizona's first offensive possession and blocked two of his 3-point attempts in the first half.

Russell kept finding ways to make shots, though, helping Grand Canyon trim a 16-point lead to 32-25 by halftime thanks to 12 turnovers by Arizona.

Arizona cleaned up the turnovers early in the second half, but couldn't make any shots, allowing Grand Canyon to pull within 44-40 midway through.

The Wildcats tried to pull away from there, but the Antelopes again fought back to make it close.
