Kansas Outlasts Arizona 75-51

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks (5-5) started strong and did not look back as they defeated the Arizona Wildcats (7-2) by a score of 75-51 on Saturday afternoon in Phog Allen Fieldhouse.

Malena Washington led the way for Arizona as she scored 17 points. That is the seventh time this season that the senior has found herself in double-figures.

Breanna Workman hit double-figures for the third time in four games as she tied a season-high with 12 points in 24 minutes off the bench. She shot 5-10 from the field.

LaBrittney Jones poured in 10 points and had a team-leading six rebounds as well. Jones has now scored in double-figures seven times this season, which is tied for the most along with Washington.

The Wildcats had a tough time from the field as they shot just 30.8% from the field and 7.7% from downtown.

It was cold outside, and so was Arizona to start the game. The Wildcats shot 25% in the first half and found themselves in a 34-20 hole going into the second half. Workman led the way for Arizona as she scored nine points in the second quarter alone. Jones also added in five of her own.

Kansas outscored the Wildcats 20-15 in the third quarter to take a 54-35 lead into the fourth quarter, but Washington would score the first eight points of the fourth to cut the lead to 54-43. The Jayhawks responded well though as they would outscore Arizona 21-8 the rest of the quarter to preserve the victory.

Arizona will head back to Tucson for one more game before Christmas as they will face Utah State on Dec. 21 at 6 p.m. MST in McKale Center.
