Arizona Takes Down New Mexico State 74-63 in Overtime

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Malena Washington scored a career-high 26 points and helped Arizona (5-1) defeat New Mexico State (5-3) 74-63 in overtime. 22 of Washington's 26 points came after halftime. Washington would also finish with a career-high eight rebounds.
 
Breanna Workman chipped in her first-career double-double after scoring 12 points and grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds. Lucia Alonso also scored in double-figures once again as she poured in 11 points. LaBrittney Jones was just short of a double-double as she scored nine points and had nine rebounds.
 
As a team, Arizona outscored New Mexico State in the paint 30-14 and outrebounded the Aggies 45-37. It was another good defensive performance from the Wildcats as they forced New Mexico State to shoot 36.8%.
 
Arizona got off to a good start in the first quarter as they took a 16-10 lead behind Breanna Workman's seven points. That is the first time since the season-opener against Alcorn State that the Wildcats had the lead going into the second quarter. The Aggies responded well by outscoring Arizona 14-10 in the second quarter, but the Wildcats would head to the locker room for halftime with a 26-24 lead.
 
After Arizona won the third quarter 15-12, the fourth quarter was filled with drama. Washington would make one free throw to tie the game at 56 with 34 seconds left and then would get a stop on the defensive end. With 1.4 seconds left, Washington's half-court shot came up just short the game would head to overtime.
 
Overtime would be all Arizona as they would outscore the Aggies 18-7. Washington would score 14 of those points.  

The Wildcats will be back in McKale Center on Wednesday, Dec. 7 as they will face San Diego. at 7 p.m. MST.
