Arizona's Tourney Run Comes to an End in the Sweet 16

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Arizona volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Friday afternoon at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, when eighth-seeded Washington ended Arizona's NCAA Tournament run in the Sweet 16 (25-15, 25-22, 25-18).

It wrapped up a historical season for Arizona, which saw UA advance to its eighth Sweet 16 and earn its 15th 20-win season. The Wildcats, who advanced to the Sweet 16 as an unseeded team after upsetting ninth-seeded Michigan State in East Lansing last week, defeated eight ranked opponents in 2016, but were unable to solve the Pac-12 Champion Huskies, who defeated Arizona for the third time this season on Friday.

"It's always disappointing when the last match of the season ends on a loss," said head coach Dave Rubio. "It's been a historical season for us and the reason is because of the senior class. It's hard for us to have perspective because it hurts right now, but as time passes by, we'll all look back fondly on the year."

Arizona's senior class graduates as the winningest class at Arizona since 2003. The seniors were a part of 83 victories at UA and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons, a first at UA since the 2005 class.

"I couldn't have asked for anything more than this group gave us," said Rubio of his seniors.

Senior setter Penina Snuka will go down as one of the best to ever play at Arizona. She wraps up her career with 356 sets played, a UA record and finishes second in both career assists (5,212) and digs (1,610).

Senior libero Laura Larson leaves Arizona as the career-leader in matches played (136). Her 1,228 career digs are fifth in Arizona history while her 505 this season are second in school history.

Senior outside hitter Kalei Mau recorded her 1,000th career kill in her final match in a Wildcat uniform, her second of nine kills on the day.

The Wildcats hit just .110 in the match, much thanks to Washington's 15.0 blocks. The Huskies hit .292 with just nine hitting errors in the match.

Kendra Dahlke led Arizona with 14 kills, while Larson and McKenna Painton both recorded 10 digs in their final career matches.

Arizona finishes the season 20-15 while Washington improved to 29-4 with the win. The Huskies advance to the round of eight, where they will meet up with host and top overall seed Nebraska for a trip to the Final Four.

It was all Washington in the first set, as the Huskies outhit Arizona .379 to .061 on their way to a 25-15 opening-set victory. Washington had seven blocks in the opening frame.

In a much more competitive second set, Arizona held the early advantage and maintained its lead 30 points into the set. UA matched its largest lead at 17-14 until the Huskies went on a run to turn the set around. The Huskies won the second 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Washington defeated Arizona in the third set, 25-18 to win the match.
