Cats Split on Second Day of Bama Bash

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Danielle O'Toole outdueled Tennessee reliever Rainey Gaffin with a complete-game shutout of 14th-ranked Tennessee as Arizona defeated the Volunteers 1-0 before No. 4 Alabama run-ruled Arizona 9-1 in six innings.

Game 1: #15 Arizona 1, #14 Tennessee 0

Danielle O'Toole outdueled Tennessee reliever Rainey Gaffin with a complete-game shutout of 14th-ranked Tennessee as Arizona defeated the Volunteers 1-0.

It is O'Toole's second complete-game shutout of a top-15 opponent after earning a shutout win over No. 4 LSU last Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. O'Toole also did not allow an earned run in Arizona's 4-3 loss to Alabama on Friday night.

O'Toole struck out seven Volunteers, including all three batters she faced in the seventh to secure the victory. The redshirt junior improved to 6-2 on the season.

One batter into the game, Arizona grabbed a 1-0 lead on Mandie Perez's leadoff home run.

Arizona chased Tennessee ace Erin Gabriel from the game in the second with a pair of walks to begin the frame.

Gaffin got out of Gabriel's trouble in the second and went on to pitch six innings of one hit ball with 10 strikeouts.

But it was Perez's solo homer five pitches into the game that made the difference for Arizona, which improved to 10-4 on the season with the victory.

Game 2: #4 Alabama 9, #15 Arizona 1 (6)

Arizona's offense managed just one run against Alabama starter Sydney Littlejohn while its three pitchers allowed nine runs in a 9-1, six-inning game on Saturday.

After loading the bases with a trio of singles with just one out in the top of the first, Arizona managed one run via an Alabama error to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Alabama answered with three hits of its own in the bottom half, including a bases-loaded double by Peyton Grantham that put Alabama ahead 2-1.

Alabama added on with an RBI single from Haylie McCleney in the third. McCleney then bombed a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Crimson Tide on top 5-1.

The Tide loaded the bases with one out in the sixth before a walk made the score 6-1.
