TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women's golf team continued play at the SDSU March Mayhem tournament at The Farms on Tuesday in San Diego, California. The Wildcats held out their lead against Kansas, winning 3.5 to 1.5.
Arizona then won in comeback style against UCLA. The two teams tied 2.5-2.5, but the Cats took the win in the tiebreak by winning more holes, 6-3.
Freshman Haley Moore maintained her strong performance again today, leading the team through another tough round. She tied her Kansas opponent in the morning, but topped her UCLA opponent, going 3&2. Freshman Gigi Stoll won her match versus Kansas, rounding out at 3&1. After starting 2-down against UCLA, Stoll came back to tie the match.
Sophomore Krystal Quihuis finished 1-up against Kansas in the morning, and then defeated UCLA by finishing at 3&1. Senior Lindsey Weaver went 3&2 versus Kansas, but lost to UCLA at 1-down. Junior Jessica Vasilic fell to her Kansas opponent 3&2, and lost at 2&1 against her UCLA opponent.
“Krystal Quihuis had a stellar day, as she played very well and won 3&1,” said head women's golf coach Laura Ianello. “Haley Moore and Gigi Stoll also contributed to the team win. We tee it up against USC for the final and it will be an intense match.”
Krystal Quihuis, last week's winner at the Arizona Intercollegiate, showed real skill on the links today by dispatching both of her opponents. Her win against Bronte Law from UCLA, former Pac-12 Golfer of the Year, was particularly impressive. She came back from 4-down to finish at 2-up, a six-hole swing over the course of the day. Stoll notched three straight birdies on the front nine, and then captured her victory by holding low after Law sank five consecutive bogeys.
Arizona will tee off again Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. PST to compete in the championship round of play versus USC. USC is the number one ranked seed in the tournament.
