TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women's golf team concluded play at the SDSU March Mayhem tournament at The Farms on Wednesday in San Diego, California. The Wildcats fell to USC after a closely contested round of play. The final score was 4-1.
Freshman Gigi Stoll won her match versus USC, rounding out at 2&1. The match went back and forth all day, but Stoll's eagle on the ninth hole gave her the lead and eventual win. Freshman Haley Moore performed admirably today, keeping every hole below par. However, she fell to her USC opponent 1-down at the end of 18 holes.
Junior Jessica Vasilic fell to her USC opponent at 1-down, after she fought to comeback several different times. Sophomore Krystal Quihuis had a back-and-forth matchup, but fell at 3&2. Senior Lindsey Weaver lost to her USC opponent at 4&3.
“The team played hard and a few matches came down to the 18th hole,” said head women's golf coach Laura Ianello. “Unfortunately, we came up a few short and were defeated by USC. They are a great team and this tournament has given us a lot of confidence moving forward.”
Freshman Gigi Stoll led the team today in her match against USC. After coming back twice from a one-hole deficit, she tied things up on the eighth hole. Her eagle on nine gave her a one-hole lead which she built to two, allowing her to clinch her victory on the 17th hole. Her performance in this tournament combined with her performance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate are positive indicators for her future with the Wildcats.
This is Arizona's second high-level finish in the last two weeks. Their success at the Arizona-hosted Wildcat Invitational in addition to their finish today will be strong motivation as the Cats head for the Pac-12 Championships in the next few weeks. The team has showed its depth and strength through many different players, many of whom are new to the team.
