Senior Weaver Leads Cats to NCAA Regionals

Tucson, Ariz. – Lindsey Weaver is the Arizona women's golf team's only senior this year. She played her first season at Notre Dame, before realizing she wanted to make a change. Having been heavily recruited as a junior in high school by the Wildcats, she decided to transfer after her freshman year.
Now, after three years with the Wildcats, Weaver has earned herself one individual crown, four individual runner-up spots, and a total of 15 top-ten placements. She has the lowest stroke average on the team at 72.75, and has notched the third-lowest round in Arizona history at 67. Weaver has played in 32 events for the Wildcats, and this upcoming NCAA regional tournament will put her over 100 rounds played for Arizona. Her honors include two WGCA Second-Team All-America awards, an All-Pac-12 First-Team award, and placements on the Pac-12 All-Academic Second-Team and Golfweek Second-Team All-America. She's developed into a legacy for the team.
“I'll probably miss the team the most,” said Weaver. “When you travel to events, whether or not you played well, it's nice to have all your teammates and coaches there for support. But I will also miss being part of a small college town in Tucson, where the school is the center of the town.”
Weaver said her fondest memory with the team came from the team's victory at the Pac-12's last year, where they managed to come back and overcome Oregon in the final round of play.
“We were a couple shots back going in to the last day,” said Weaver. “I was the last player, and I wasn't playing that well through the turn. I was one-over after nine, but we were still in contention, and I knew that if I could turn things around then we would have a shot at winning. I ended up making five birdies overall and three in my last five holes, and we won by five shots over Oregon.”
This year at the Pac-12 Championships, the Wildcats took fourth behind champions USC, who finished at 18-under par. However, this hasn't stopped Weaver from looking ahead to this year's NCAA Regional Championships.
“I think our biggest goal is to qualify for nationals,” said Weaver. “If we play well, that would give us some confidence going into the national tournament. I don't think we have peaked yet as a team and I think that's in the future, in these next few tournaments. We have a chance to win the National Championship if that happens.”
Those are some lofty goals for the Arizona women's golf team, but Weaver is right. Each tournament this year, the team has been led by a different player. If the entire team clicks in these next few tournaments, anything becomes possible. Despite the result of her final rounds of play, Weaver's post-tournament plans are to stick with golf.
“I am planning to turn professional,” said Weaver. “I will play in a few tournaments this summer and will be in Tucson for most of the summer. I plan to use that play to help me prepare for Q-School in August.”
No matter what happens to Weaver, the University of Arizona women's golf team is proud to call her an alum, as she will surely be remembered and praised as a great player for the team.
“Lindsey is one of the best female golfers to come out of the University of Arizona,” said head women's coach Laura Ianello. “She is a three-year All-American and I look forward to watching her future success in the pro ranks.
