Arizona Sends off Seniors with 67-62 Win Over USC

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats (14-15, 5-13 Pac-12) honored the seniors with a win on senior day over the USC Trojans (14-15, 5-13 Pac-12) by a score of 67-62 on Sunday afternoon in McKale Center.

"For the seniors, there was a lot of emotion tonight," head coach Adia Barnes said. "What I'm proud about is that we were able to weather the storm and find a way. "We are losing a tremendous amount with Breanna, LaBrittney, Lauren, Dejza and Malena."

LaBrittney Jones is now 12th all-time in Arizona history with 1,240 points after scoring 18 points today. She also added in seven rebounds and a set a new career-high with seven blocks.

"We knew we didn't want to lose our last game in McKale," James said. "We all turned it up a notch. We started getting rebounds, blocking shots, and making baskets, so that's what really helped us out."

Dejza James started for the first time this season and recorded her second career double-double as she scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Breanna Workman also recorded a double-double as she scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds.

"We all had our own moments in the game," James said. "I was just trying to put it all out there. It was our last game in McKale, and I didn't want to regret anything."

Malena Washington got off to a blazing start as she scored 11 first-quarter points and would end up finishing the game with 14 points. Lauren Evans did a little bit of everything as she scored four points, had five rebounds and dished out four assists.

"I had a rough past couple of games," Washington said. "But I never stopped believing that I could shoot the basketball. My teammates were good about keeping my confidence up."

The five seniors of Jones, James, Evans, Workman and Washington scored all but five of Arizona's points.

The Wildcats got off to their best start of the season as they scored a season-high 24 points in the first quarter. At one point, Arizona was up 23-6, but the Trojans went on an 8-1 run to end the quarter. Washington scored 11 points on the back of three three-pointers in the first quarter. The second quarter was a different story as the Wildcats were held to just five points, but did take a 32-27 lead into halftime.

James exploded in the third quarter as she scored 10 of Arizona's 13 points, giving Arizona a 45-38 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was high scoring as the two teams combined to score 46 points. 22 of them came from Arizona, 11 from Jones, which was enough to give the Wildcats their fifth Pac-12 victory of the season.

Five conference victories is the most Arizona has accumulated in Pac-12 history. The last time they won more than five conference games was when they won 10 Pac-10 games back in 2011.

With that, the Wildcats have wrapped up and will head to the Pac-12 Tournament next week, which is held in Seattle, Wash. Arizona will face the Oregon Ducks in the 6/11 matchup on Thursday, Mar. 2 at 9:30 p.m. MST.
