Wildcats Win Two, Qualify for HEB Tournament Finals

Corpus Christi, Texas.- The Arizona men's tennis team won two big matches on the first day of the 2017 HEB Tennis Tournament on Friday, March 3rd and will compete against No.28 South Alabama in the tournament finals on Saturday, March 4th at 11 a.m. MST. The now 8-4 Wildcats took down UTSA by a score of 4-1 in their first match of the tournament not long before besting NMSU (4-0) in the semi-finals.
"This was a defining moment on our season," said head coach Clancy Shields. "We had over eight hours of tennis today. We were playing indoors and outdoors, in rain and wind, and in back-to-back matches, but our guys stayed gritty and resilient the whole way through. We have the finals tomorrow against 28th-ranked South Alabama and we are looking forward to a battle."
Arizona's took the doubles point against UTSA to go into singles competition with a 1-0 advantage. Senior Oliver Plaskett increased Arizona's lead to 2-0 with a win over UTSA freshman Igor Cantanhede (6-0, 6-4) not long before junior Trent Botha brought Arizona within one point of victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UTSA freshman Patrick Poestinger on court three. Meparidze secured the win and finalized the score at 4-1 with his three set win over Kai Breitbach on court one (6-7, 6-1, 6-4).
The Wildcats only had a few hours to recover for their next opponent of the day: NMSU. Due to weather and time contraints Arizona and New Mexico went straight into singles play instead of beginning with doubles. Freshman Alejandro Reguant put Arizona on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win over NMSU junior Sergi Espias not long before senior Will Kneale increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over freshman Luis Flores on court two. Plaskett managed to stay perfect throughout the day and brought Arizona within one point of victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over NMSU sophomore Mauri Benitiz on court six. With Arizona just one point away from the win, junior Shoki Kasahara sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-3 win over sophomore Enrique Asmar on court five.
