Arizona women's golf great Lorena Ochoa was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday in New York City.
Ochoa won the WGCA Player of the Year in her two years in Tucson, which included 12 individual tournament victories. Ochoa won eight of the ten events she competed in during her sophomore season, including seven in a row to begin the year. Ochoa finished in the top two in all but two events in her collegiate career. Ochoa shot at par or better in 47 of 60 career rounds with a scoring average of 70.85
"I was fortunate to get a scholarship in Tucson," said Ochoa during her induction. "I will never forget when I received the nice envelope and I was able to play college golf, and being a golfer at the University of Arizona really changed my life. It was an amazing experience, the facility, the school energy, my teammates, my coach, and more important, my friendships. You guys were always there for me and when I needed a kick in the butt, you gave it. I was able to become the best woman NCAA player and achieve my dream as a Wildcat. Thank you."
Ochoa was enshrined into the hall along with the rest of the 2017 class including Davis Love III, Meg Mallon, Ian Woosnam, and Henry Longhurst.
Ochoa earned 27 LPGA victories including two majors in her time on the LPGA Tour where she was ranked World Number One for 158 consecutive weeks from 2007-2010. She is the first Mexican born player inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, and also earned more than $14 million dollars on the LPGA Tour.
After her playing career, Ochoa founded the Lorena Ochoa Golf Foundation to provide opportunities for children and adults with family-based health, fitness, and education and inclusion programs through golf activities.
