Cats to Celebrate Anniversaries of Top Teams on Homecoming

From the moment he took over as Arizona's head coach, Kevin Sumlin has made it a priority to embrace the Arizona Football family.

From connecting to former coach Dick Tomey, to honoring former student-athletes on a weekly basis through the Honorary Captain program, Sumlin has worked hard to honor those who have come before him.

So it's fitting that in Sumlin's first season as leader of the program, Arizona Football is spending this Homecoming celebrating the anniversaries of three of its finest teams in program history. The 1968 team, celebrating its 50-year anniversary, went 8-3 and played Auburn in the Sun Bowl. The 1993 squad, celebrating its 25-year anniversary, went 10-2 and thrashed Miami (Fla.) in the Fiesta Bowl, 29-0. And of course the 1998 team went 12-1 and a program-best 7-1 in Pac-10/12 play 20 years ago.

We take a closer look at each of the three teams below:

1968
What to know: Facing one of the toughest schedules in school history, Arizona produced one of its finest seasons ever with a breakout campaign in 1968. In his second and final season at UA, future College Football Hall of Fame coach Darrell Mudra led the Wildcats to an 8-3 record, including a 5-1 mark in league play to finish tied for second in the WAC. Arizona was invited to play Auburn in the Sun Bowl, which was only the school's third bowl appearance and easily the most prestigious postseason invitation to date for the Wildcats.

Best Moment: In order to secure a bowl bid, Arizona had to beat No. 20 Wyoming. The Wildcats won 14-7 and dashed Wyoming's hopes for a bowl bid. The Wildcats came back from a 7-0 deficit on Bruce Lee's touchdown pass to Mark Boche in the third quarter. Ed Mitchell's 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter put Arizona ahead for good and secured a seven-point win in front of more than 40,000 fans.

1993
What to know: At the time, Arizona's 10-2 record was the Wildcats' finest season in 90 seasons of Arizona football, spanning 94 years back to the first season in 1899. Arizona had three previous 9-2 regular season records and Larry Smith's 1986 team finished 9-3 after an Aloha Bowl victory over North Carolina. The 1993 Cats earned their 10th win the hard way, topping No. 10 Miami 29-0, recording the first shutout in the Fiesta Bowl's 23-year-old history at the time. Running back Chuck Levy ran for 148 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown run, while quarterback Dan White threw two touchdown passes.

Number to know: 59: The 1993 Arizona defense finished with an amazing 59 sacks on the season. That led the Pac-10 by a margin of 16. The defense had sacks by 14 different players, and was led by Tedy Bruschi, who had 20 total sacks, after adding one in the Fiesta Bowl. Arizona had a total of 103 tackles-for-loss during the season.

1998
What to know: The 1998 Arizona football team will forever be remembered as one of the best in school history. Dick Tomey's Wildcats were only the second UA club to win 10 games in a season and the first to do so in the regular season. Arizona posted its best-ever conference record, going 7-1 and earning a trip to the Holiday Bowl where they capped the season with a thrilling 23-20 victory over perennial power Nebraska. The bowl victory capped a 12-win season for the Wildcats, who became only the fourth team in 83 seasons of Pac-10 football to win a dozen games in a single year. Arizona finished the season with its highest ranking in school history, placing fourth in both the coaches and Associated Press polls.

Number to know: 288: Running back Trung Canidate ran for 288 yards and three touchdowns against Arizona State in the Territorial Cup. The Wildcats won 50-42.
