TUCSON, Ariz. – Lauryn Mattson, what can't she do? A junior on the Arizona gymnastics team, Mattson excels in every aspect of her life. Most recently, she landed an internship with Nike in their 2018 summer program. She will be working as a Human Resources intern under an HR team at Nike headquarters in Portland, Ore., and she will specifically be working with immigration and proposing ideas about how to improve their processes.
"This is an unbelievable opportunity," said Becky Bell, Associate Athletic Director for Cats Life Skills. "Lauryn worked so hard to be prepared for all the steps of their interview process, and I think she's going to do a tremendous job representing the University of Arizona."
Each summer, Nike extends a summer internship to two student-athletes from Arizona, and after several interviews, Mattson was determined to be the right fit for the program.
"Having this internship is going to look fantastic on her resume," Bell added. "This partnership between Arizona and Nike has helped student-athletes prepare for their future for many years." Tamara Statman from Softball will join Mattson as they head to Nike headquarters in Oregon this summer.
"Lauryn is a great person, student-athlete, and teammate," said head coach John Court. "She loves Arizona and has always represented herself and her team with pride. I am very excited that she was awarded this opportunity with Nike, and would like to thank Becky Bell for the work she has done with Lauryn and all of our gymnasts throughout the years."
Mattson is currently studying in the Eller School of Business, and has worked hard for the past three years to excel in both the gym and the classroom. In 2017, she was a Scholastic All-American, and has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher for the past three years. Mattson also is a constant starter for the GymCats, competing in all but two meets throughout her collegiate career. She currently holds a career high of 9.875 on vault and a 9.925 on floor. Mattson served as captain of the Cats for the 2016-17 season, and helped lead them to NCAA Regional competition in Lincoln, Neb., where they finished fifth.
"I have heard nothing but good things about summer in Portland, so I am excited to explore the city and go to the coast," said Lauryn Mattson. "It is going to be amazing to meet and work with students and student-athletes from all over the country. I have already gotten a lot of support and advice from Nike employees, so I cannot wait to see where this internship takes me!"
