Arizona in Fifth after First Day of ASU Invitational
04/14/2018 | Men's Golf
PHOENIX, Ariz.- The Arizona men's golf team concluded the first day of play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in fifth place with a team score of 562 (-6). Leading Arizona was sophomore David Laskin, who is tied for third going into the final round.
"Our team is very close to being very good," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "We had a solid day and apart from a couple untimely bad shots, we would be right in there. As it is, we have a chance to play with the top team in the country tomorrow and our guys have plenty of confidence. We know what we need to do to be in position on the challenging fast greens and firm course. It should be a fun day and we will be ready. David was so patient today and I was completely impressed with his focus and demeanor. His whole day was controlled and he is breaking through as we speak."
Laskin had a strong and steady performance throughout both rounds, leading him to a top five spot at the end of the day, with a score of 134 (-8). The sophomore set a career low 18 hole round score of 64, besting his 65 from earlier this season at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Laskin notched 11 birdies between both rounds, the third most in the competition. He also ranked in the top five in both par 3 and par 4 scoring.
"I played really well in the morning," said Laskin. "I had the putter going and was able to hit a lot of good shots to the correct side of the pins today so I was able to take advantage of a lot of scoring opportunities. The team still in a good position to be able to have a great final round! I believe that we can put together our best stuff out there and close out the tournament strong."
Senior George Cunningham wrapped up the first day of competition, scoring 141 (-1). The Tucson native will head into the final round in a tie for 20th, with seven birdies and one eagle.
Freshman Trevor Werbylo scored 143 (+1), placing tied for 29th. Sophomore Brad Reeves finished day one with a score of 144 (+2), and tying for 38th. Freshman Gavin Cohen is tied in 59th, scoring 148 (+6).
The final round of the ASU Thunderbird will begin tomorrow with a 7 a.m shotgun start. Live results can be followed on Golfstat.com, at this link: http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=14986, as well as on Twitter at @ArizonaMGolf.
