TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 13 Arizona hit six home runs, two each from
Dejah Mulipola and
Alyssa Palomino, and swept New Mexico State in a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Hillenbrand Stadium, 7-3 and 9-0 (5).
Arizona returns to action on Friday in Tempe, Arizona, where they begin a three-game series with No. 8 Arizona State.
Game 1: #13 Arizona 7, New Mexico State 3
Arizona hit four home runs, two by
Dejah Mulipola, to win game 1 of the doubleheader with New Mexico State.
UA's seven runs all came via the long ball;
Alyssa Palomino and
Jessie Harper each hit two-run homers while Mulipola brought in three runs with her two homers.
Palomino and Harper each hit their 13th of the season, pulling them into a tie for the Pac-12 lead in home runs. Mulipola's two gave her 10 for the season.
Taylor McQuillin, who brought a no-hitter into the fifth-inning, got the victory in the circle for the Cats to improve to 19-8 on the season. She allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits with 10 strikeouts.
Seven different Wildcats had hits in the game. Palomino, Harper, Mulipola and Craighton had two apiece.
Alyssa Palomino opened the scoring with a
Dejah Mulipolarun off the batter's eye, her 13th of the season.
Dejah Mulipola led off the second inning with UA's second homer of the day, a blast to deep left.
Jessie Harper and Mulipola each hit two-run homers in the bottom of the fourth to put the Cats on top 7-0.
New Mexico State broke up the shutout with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Game 2: #13 Arizona 9, New Mexico State 0 (5 innings)
Alyssa Denham tossed a two-hit shutout and her offense supported her with nine runs on seven hits, as the Cats used a 9-0, five-inning victory to sweep the doubleheader with New Mexico State.
Alyssa Palomino and
Ivy Davis each hit two-run home runs in the game to lead the offense. For Palomino, it was her second homer of the doubleheader and her Pac-12-best 14th of the year. Overall, Palomino and Davis' homers brought UA's total to six in the doubleheader and 56 on the season.
In addition to the two, two-run homers,
Jessie Harper also had two RBI with a double in the fourth and
Reyna Carranco posted an RBI as well in the contest.
UA took advantage of four NMSU errors to plate four unearned runs in the game.
Denham (6-3) was terrific in the circle for the Cats. She allowed two hits in her second shutout of the season while striking out a season-most eight.
