TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sophomore pitcher
Alyssa Denham limited No. 8 Arizona State to one run on two hits, while the Wildcat offense plated four runs on eight hits, as No. 13 Arizona evened the three-game series with Arizona State with a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Denham's gem was the second consecutive two-hitter hurled by an Arizona pitcher in the series;
Taylor McQuillin was brilliant in a 2-1 loss on Friday night. On Saturday, Arizona's offense offered support, putting up four runs on eight hits against Arizona State starter Breanna Macha (10-5).
The only run surrendered by Denham was a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Alvin, Texas native improved to 7-3 on the season. She struck out two and walked four.
Reyna Carranco was terrific both at the plate and in the field for the Wildcats. She went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the fourth inning. She also made a handful of nice defensive plays in the game at second base.
Carli Campbell went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the game as well.
The victory tied the series at one game apiece with the rubber match set for Sunday at 5 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Networks. Arizona improved to 30-13, 7-10 Pac-12 while the Sun Devils fell to 35-8, 9-5 Pac-12.
Arizona put its first two runners of the game aboard when
Ashleigh Hughes and Carranco kicked off the game with singles. UA would squander that chance and then waste two more two-on opportunities in the second and third innings.
The Cats finally broke through in the fourth.
Aleah Craighton led off the inning with a double and
Ivy Davis followed with a walk.
Carli Campbell singled home Craighton before Carranco brought home Davis and Campbell with a double to right to put the Cats up 3-0 after 3.5 innings.
ASU's first hit of the game was a home run by Morgan Howe to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
Macha retired the first two hitters of the fifth inning before Craighton drew a nine-pitch walk to start a two-out rally. Davis followed with a walk and Campbell hit a chopper to second base. ASU second baseman Maris Stankiewicz threw the ball away, allowing Craighton to score from the third and give the Cats a 4-1 lead in the fifth.
Up next: Arizona and Arizona State conclude the series on Sunday at 5 p.m. MST.
