Late Homers Lead Oregon in Game 1

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon catcher Gwen Svekis hit two home runs, including a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, leading No. 5 Oregon to a 5-2 victory in game 1 of the three game series at Jane Sanders Stadium.

Svekis' two home runs were two of four hits allowed by McQuillin in the game. The five runs surrendered by McQuillin were the most since opening day. The junior was throwing a one-hitter until three hits, including back-to-back Oregon homers in the bottom of the sixth, turned a 1-1 tie into a 5-1 Oregon lead. All five Oregon runs scored on three Oregon long balls. McQuillin, who struck out three and walked five, fell to 18-5 on the season with the loss.

UA outhit Oregon 8-4 in the game. Jessie Harper went 2-for-2 with two doubles and her 33rd RBI of the season. Alyssa Palomino also notched two hits while Aleah Craighton plated UA's other run in the game.

The ninth-ranked Wildcats fell to 27-7, 6-4 Pac-12 on the year while Oregon improved to 30-6, 5-2 Pac-12. The two teams will meet again on Saturday at noon on ESPN.

Oregon's first hit of the game was a solo home run by Svekis to lead off the bottom the second.

Jessie Harper led off the top of the sixth with a double. An error put WiAleah Craightond and third with one out. A fielder's choice off the bat of Aleah Craighton plated Harper to tie the game at 1.

An infield single and a walk put two on with no one out for Oregon in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back home runs from Svekis and Shannon Rhodes gave Oregon a 5-1 lead.
