NAPA, Calif. – The Arizona women's golf team is tied for second place after shooting an opening round score of 292 (+4) on Sunday. The Cats are only two shots behind first place USC heading into the second round of play at Silverado Resort and Country Club.
"I'm very proud of how the ladies battled today," said head coach Laura Ianello. "We didn't have our best stuff but our short games saved us. We need to work hard this afternoon in making adjustments to improve for the next two days. I'm proud of Gigi for playing hard after a tough start and Bianca for finishing strong with an under par round. We have two more days to hopefully make up some shots."
Junior Bianca Pagdanganan led the way for the Cats shooting a 1-under par round of 71 that included four birdies and she is currently tied for fifth place. Junior Gigi Stoll is tied for 12th place after carding a 1-over par round of 73. Stoll had a triple bogey on her opening hole but recovered nicely shooting 2-under for her next 17 holes.
Junior Haley Moore is tied for 19th at 2-over par after posting an opening round of 74. Freshman Yu-Sang Hou started off red hot with three consecutive birdies on her back nine, but struggled on the front and finished her round tied for 19th at 2-over par. Sophomore Sandra Nordaas shot a 76 in her round putting her at 4-over for the tournament and in a tie for 42nd place.
UA was very steady all day, and finished the round with 59 pars and 13 birdies good for second and third in the tournament respectively. All five Wildcat players shot below the field average of 76.26 in the 1st round.
Jennifer Chang of USC is the individual leader at 6-under par after firing an opening round of 66.
