CHICAGO – Former University of Arizona Wildcat
Lauri Markkanen was selected to the NBA's All-Rookie First Team following his standout rookie season for the Chicago Bulls in 2017-18. Markkanen scored over 1,000 points and grabbed more than 500 rebounds, becoming the first Chicago rookie to join the 1,000-500 Club since Elton Brand in the 1998-99 season.
The native of Finland set a NBA record as the quickest player to 100 made three-point field goals in a career, burying 100 three-pointers in his first 41 games of his career. Markkanen's blistering pace surpassed Damian Lillard's mark of 44 games.
Markkanen was the seventh overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to Chicago on draft night as part of the Jimmy Butler trade. The 7-footer was fourth Wildcat to go in the top ten of the draft during the
Sean Miller era of 2009 to present. He represented the 70
th player to be drafted in Arizona Basketball history and the 22
nd to go in the first round.
The forward averaged 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game as a freshman at Arizona while shooting 42.3 percent from beyond the arc and 83.5 percent from the free throw line. He was a Third-Team All-American and Pac-12 All-Conference First Team selection for a Wildcat team that finished with a record of 32-5 and won a pair of conference championships. Markkanen was also a voted to the Pac-12's All-Freshmen team by the league coaches. He went on to earn numerous national accolades, including being a USBWA All-District Team selection, Naismith Trophy semifinalist, Karl Malone Award finalist and a John R. Wooden Award finalist.
