Arizona Sweeps Oregon State, Completes 2-0 Road Trip

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- No. 24 Arizona swept Oregon State (25-18, 25-13, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon in Corvallis, Oregon, using its dominant offense to overpower Oregon State in three quick sets.

The sweep of the Beavers, who were receiving votes in this week's AVCA Top 25, came two days after a five-set win at No. 12 Oregon. Arizona's 2-0 trip to the Beaver State marks its first since 2010.

"It's a rare road sweep," said Arizona head coach Dave Rubio. "I'm proud of how the team performed today and this weekend, but now it's about carrying that forward and moving on to next weekend."

Arizona's road weekend sweep was the first of the Pac-12 season this year. It was Arizona's first since defeating UCLA and USC in Los Angeles in the 2016 season.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 14-2, 3-1 Pac-12 while Oregon State dropped to 10-6, 0-4 Pac-12. Arizona will now return home to face Washington (Friday) and Washington State (Sunday) in what should be a pair of ranked matchups in McKale Center.

The Wildcats hit nearly .400 for the match, piling up 52 kills on .381 hitting in the sweep. Three Wildcats had eight-or-more kills on .300-or-better hitting. Arizona's two starting outside hitters, Paige Whipple and Kendra Dahlke, had a combined 32 kills with just two total errors.

Arizona's .381 hitting percentage was its highest in a Pac-12 match since hitting .412 against California last year. UA's 52 kills were its most in a three-set match since its 52 kills in a sweep of Cal on Nov. 9, 2014.

Oregon-native Paige Whipple led the way in her home state, posting a season-high-tying 18 kills on a career-best .515 hitting while adding nine digs, an ace and a block.

"Paige was terrific," said Rubio. "I was happy for her to be able to put up those kind of numbers and play that well in her hometown. She's playing with a lot of confidence and it's great to see."

Kendra Dahlke notched 14 kills and 14 digs for her Pac-12-best 11th double-double of the season; Dahlke hit .302 in the match.

Devyn Cross needed just 11 error-free swings to produce eight kills (.727). Cross led the Wildcats with four blocks.

Arizona used its high-powered offense to overwhelm the Beavers in the first set. UA had 18 kills on .400 hitting, eight of which came from Oregon-native Paige Whipple. UA won the first set, 25-18.

The Wildcats led wire-to-wire in the second and picked up a dominant 25-13 victory to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Cats closed out the match with a 25-22 win in the third.
