TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona beach volleyball will compete in 29 matches, 8 of which will be against Pac-12 foes during the 2019 regular season as announced by head coach
Steve Walker. With 16 home matches scheduled, the Wildcats will look to build on last season's 20-12 record and final AVCA national ranking of No. 14.
"Coming out of our fall training, I was really pleased with the progress that was made by this collection of players," They've come back from winter recess in fine condition and if we can continue to improve throughout the spring on the parts of the game we've established as necessary for success, there is no telling what can accomplish. I believe this is a team will be ready, and more importantly willing to lay everything on the line for each other, for this athletic department and everything the University of Arizona represents."
The fans' first opportunity to catch the team in action will be on February 15th during the Red-Blue Scrimmage which begins at 5:30 p.m. inside Bear Down Beach. Admission to the Red-Blue Scrimmage and all other home matches will be free.
The Wildcats will kick off their regular season by hosting the two-day Cactus Classic. Play will begin on February 22nd with matches against Colorado Mesa (12:30 p.m.) and Boise State (4:30 p.m.). The Cats will then have a night of rest before taking on Benedictine University at Mesa (10:15 a.m.) and Boise State (1:00 p.m.) the following day.
Arizona will then prepare to play host again, this time to USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, ASU, Washington, and Oregon during the Pac-12 South Invitational Tournament. The tournament is set to run from March 2-3 with Arizona slated to play USC (11:30 a.m.) and Oregon (5:45 p.m.) on March 2nd followed by a final match, this time against Stanford, the following day at 11:30 am. All of Arizona's Pac-12 South Invitational matches will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.
The Wildcats then head to Irvine, California, where they are scheduled to play Concordia University (11 a.m.) and Irvine Valley College (1 p.m.) on March 6th as part of the IVC Tri-Match.
Following the IVC Tri-Match the team will head home and prepare to host the Arizona Invitational which will take place March 15-16. The Wildcats' first matches will be against Louisiana Monroe (12:30 p.m.) and Arizona State (4:30 p.m.) on the 15th followed by matches against North Florida (11:00 a.m.) and New Mexico (1:00 p.m.) on the 16th.
The Cats next challenges will come in the form of three away tournaments. Arizona will compete in the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee, Florida with matches scheduled against FSU (10:30 a.m.) and Stetson (12:00 p.m.) on March 22nd and a final match against Austin Peay (9:30 a.m.) on the 23rd.
The Wildcats will then play two matches against Pac-12-opponent Washington on March 29th at Seattle's Alki Beach.
The final contest in this stretch of road matches will be the ASU Tournament in Tempe. The Wildcats are scheduled to take on Abilene Christian (9:00 a.m.) and Cal Poly (1:00 p.m.) on April 6th before facing Pac-12 opponents Utah (2:00 p.m.) and ASU (4:00 p.m.) the following day.
Arizona will then host their fourth and final home tournament of their regular season: the Wildcat Spring Challenge which will run from April 12-13. The Wildcats will face Ottawa University (1:30 p.m.) and Santa Clara University (5:30 p.m.) on the 12th before facing New Mexico (10:15 a.m.) and Santa Clara (1:00 p.m.) the following day.
The Wildcats' final regular season matches will take place at the Boise State Invitational which spans April 19-20 in Boise, Idaho. Arizona will face Sacramento State (11:00 a.m.) and Boise State (5:00 p.m.) on the 19th before Arizona competes in their final match of the regular season: a 10:00 a.m. matchup against Sacramento State on the 20th.
The postseason will begin five days later, with Pac-12 Tournament slated for an April 25th start.
