Tucson, Ariz. – On Friday, the University of Arizona track and field team will travel to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. The two-day contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. MST on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.

"We are heading to our first combined team meet with cross sections of everyone; distance, jumps, throws, sprints and hurdles," said head track and field coach Fred Harvey. "We are pretty excited about it. I thought last week was a really good opener for us. We want to see how we are competing, if we are going to stress about not being ready or if we are going to compete. The competition level jumps up ten-fold this week in Iowa… There are going to be a lot of good teams and it is going to give us a good indication of how we are devolving and how we are progressing through these next couple weeks. This meet is important in terms of getting some top-16 marks in for the NCAAs and I feel pretty strong that the athletes are getting fit and ready to go."

The Field: Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri, Purdue and Wisconsin.

Last Time Out: The Cats competed in the NAU Friday Night Duals. Sophomore Jordan Geist opened the season with an NCAA leading mark in the shot put with a toss of 20.27m (66-6).

One Mile at a Time: Carlos Villarreal is set to make his indoor debut at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational to compete in the mile where he holds a PR of 3:57.64 in the event. The redshirt junior is coming off a cross-country season that saw a bid to the NCAA Championships.

400s: Tatum Waggoner and Umajesty Williams set top-10 NCAA marks in their first outing of the season. Williams ran an indoor PR time of 47.06 to rank third on the NCAA list. Waggoner opened 2019 setting the seventh best mark in the nation with a time of 54.42.

Jumping For Marks: Lillian Lowe and Justice Summerset opened their indoor campaign setting top-16 marks in the high jump. Lowe cleared 1.80m (5-10.75) to own the fifth best mark in the county to date, Summerset posted a mark of 2.15m (7-0.5) to rank 11th on the NCAA list.
