
Student-Athletes of the Month Named for January

Football, Women’s Swimming, Baseball, and Women’s Track and Field are all represented in the latest edition of Student-Athletes of the Month.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Football's Rhedi Short, Women's Swimming's Jamie Stone, Baseball's Matt Dyer, and Women's Track and Field's Hannah Whetzel have been honored as the student-athletes of the month for January.
These students have been honored for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.
These students have been chosen by the C.A.T.S Academic staff.
Short, a sophomore from Los Angeles, California, continues to complete his Pre-Business requisites. Before his time here at Arizona, Short finished his high school football career named as first-team All-Angeles League his junior and senior year where he lead his team to an 11-1 record his last year.
"Rhedi significantly improved his grades from Spring 2018 to Fall 2018. In the fall semester he set a GPA goal for himself and he was able to accomplish it. He placed more focus on the quality of his work this semester, and staying organized which really paid off in the end," learning specialist Michelle Galambos said.
Stone is a sophomore from Portland, Oregon majoring in Accounting. Last season, she had the second-fastest time on the team in the 50 free (22.30) and 100 free (48.85) earning her NCAA B cuts at the Pac-12 Championships. She also finished the season with an All-American Honorable Mention in the 200 and 800 free relay.
"Jamie is a fantastic student-athlete who is dedicated to working hard both in and out of the pool," academic counselor Kiaira Ladd said. "Jamie applied to Eller School of Business last semester as part of the Admission with Excellence candidate pool, which speaks to her to her strong skills as a student. Jamie is an exemplary student who will accomplish great things at the University of Arizona and beyond!"
Dyer is from Glendale, Arizona working towards a degree in Sports and Society. A transfer from the University of Oregon, he joins the Wildcats during his junior year. During his senior year of high school, Dyer was named first-team all-league honors for hitting .440 due to his 21 RBI and 10 doubles throughout the season, earning his team a state-runner-up finish.
"Matt was in several online, first and second seven week classes and he did well in them. He stayed organized and on top of the fast paced classes, and improved his grades from Spring to Fall," Michelle Galambos said. "He always came into appointments with a good attitude and worked hard."
Whetzel looks to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering this Spring. During her time here, Whetzel has been named Pac-12 Second-Team All-Academic and hit her personal best marks in the indoors mile at 5:49.32 as well as the outdoors 5,000- meter race with 18:30.62 all back in her 2016 season.
"Hannah is a graduating senior from right here in Tucson majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout her time here she has continued to work hard on the track while also maintaining a stellar GPA," academic counselor Corey Talley said.
