ATLANTA, Ga. --Â The Arizona women's golf team went down to the wire with Wake Forest on Tuesday, but eventually fell 3.5-1.5 in the semifinals of the East Lake Cup.
Â
Senior
Sandra Nordaas was the first off for the Wildcats, taking on Emilia Migliaccio of Wake Forest. Nordaas recorded three birdies on the day, but it was not enough to overcome Migliaccio, who went on to win 2&1.
Â
Freshman
Therese Warner went 2 up through 14 holes against Siyun Liu, but Liu won three of the last four holes to take match number two. Freshman
Gile Bite Starkute fought back against individual champion Vanessa Knecht, but couldn't birdie the 18th to continue the match.
Â
Sophomore
Ya Chun Chang was the last one off for the Wildcats, but made quick work of her match, winning 5&4 against Rachel Kuehn. Chang was 2-under through 14 holes with no bogeys on her scorecard. Freshman
Vivian Hou was all square with Lauren Walsh when their match was called on the 17th hole.
Â
"We hung in there until the end," said head coach
Laura Ianello. "A couple of matches I knew Wake Forest put their top guns out early, so I knew we were going to need to win one of those first three matches. We had some good looks. It was a good day but sadly we won't be playing for a cup. But we'll go at it tomorrow against a great team, Duke, who we lost to at Nationals and go from there."Â
The Wildcats will take on the defending national champion Duke Blue Devils in the consolation match Wednesday morning. Tee times have been moved up due to weather forecasts. Golf Channel will begin its live coverage of play at 7:30 a.m. MST.
